I hate to say it...
The game may always go the other way, but today the Mets are very clearly putting the better team on the field.  I think this may be the first time since interleague play began that there was just no question about which team was better, and it was us.

by anonymous on May 20, 2006 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yes
Given the talent available, the Mets are the better team. It's easy (or convenient) to forget that the Yankees are without Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui, both All Stars, and were without Jorge Posada for almost all of last night's game (though Kelly Stinnett acquitted himself quite well). With Cliff Floyd hitting as he has, you could make the argument that the Mets are without one of their best hitters, but a Yankee lineup at full health likely would have done more damage last night than the team that was actually on the field.

All you can do is play the cards you are dealt and, sticking with the poker analogue, the Mets hit a straight flush on the river last night.

$kank$
have bought themselves a pretty good squad, but i won't shed any tears because some of those big dollar players on the DL.

one of the reasons we've got the better team (now and in the long run) is because we're younger and as a result healthier.

we are one big pitcher away from being dominant.

Injuries
Oh, any tears I shed will be for joy; when healthy (always a tricky caveat) the Yankees' lineup is far and away the best in baseball. Getting all of those geriatrics on the field at once is a challenge, to be sure.

Heh.
I see Fox, during their X-Men promo, equated the Yankees to the villains and the Mets were the heroes.  Guess that makes Xavier Nady = Professor X?

I don't think
Mussina has pitched badly at all. A lot of lesser men would have crumbled under the pressure of two big errors. But that's all he's given up and been pretty solid today.

What happened
umpires give time so many times to batters these days. If you didn't foul the ball off or the pitcher is taking too long, no time should be given.

I was just wondering since
the high strike is never called when I think it really should be considering it's the pitch hitters love to hit. I think if the hitters like hitting it so much, it should be called a strike.

But, if that's a strike, I just want it called consistently.

with this Mets buying a team crap. The Mets payroll is about 1/2 what the Yankees payroll is. Less than the Red Sox and about what the teams in the teams in their division are spending and other big market teams. He ignores that fact that right now they 4 levels of spending in MLB. Small market, middle market, big market and Yankees.

You would think so, but that's not customary
You are obligated to stick with your closer, even if they ain't got it on a given day. You can't relieve your supreme reliever unless they have the loss staring them in the face (i.e., when Willie finally did).

It's stupid, but that's the way the pecking order goes. You get accused of "undermining" them.

The correct course of action was to not bring him in until it was, in fact, a save opportunity. However, there is probably pressure from corporate to display the stars of the team in front of a national audience.

yes,
I would have yanked him by then, but leaving Wags in for Bernie is completely defensible.  Williams is a great, great candidate for the game-ending DP: he has little bat speed left and also little foot speed, and Wagner was still throwing hard.  The readiness of the bullpen was also a factor -- Wags imploded pretty quickly, and Feliciano might not have been ready that soon.

We've seen Wager hiccup before
He has given up a four-pitch walk before and then turned around and closed it out.  You can't pull your ace reliever every time he looks bad to a couple of batters in a row.  I agree, it's debatable, and I probably would have had a shorter leash than Willie myself here given how bad Wagner looked, but there's no way this is a cut-and-dried example of managerial incompetence.

Hey guys, all that sticking with your closer and all that is great, but managing the game is what Willie is paid for(he can soothe Wagner's ego after the game is WON!)......Bernie is a much bigger threat batting right-handed, and despite Bradford's stats, considering Wagner's meltdown, getting him out with 2 runs for the new reliever to work with was the move to make.

If you're replying to my post three screens up, which used that phrase, I already agreed that Wagner looked bad.  Terrible, even.  But honestly, you can't expect Willie to have that short a hook for his ace reliever, or else you'd (or someone would) be bitching just as loudly about all the games Feliciano blew when Wagner "should have" stayed in.

Please use the "Reply to this" link to post replies, or else it's impossible to figure out what discussion you're participating in and your comment just looks like an inexplicable outburst.

reply
I wasn't replying directly to you with that post, I simply used your phrase to continue the general conversation whether Wagner or Willie was more to blame; sorry if there was any confusion. I tend to try to look at the entire situation, and while the immediate blame is Wagner's for sure, the fact that he should not have even been in the game at that point(and allowing him to implode before our very eyes) is Willie's fault! He is horrendous at managing a pitching staff(Jeff Brantley on ESPN stated my exact opinion on the subject by relating his own problems coming into non-save situations like this).......Sanchez had not pitched last night, pitched only 1 inning in this game, there was a 4-0 lead, and if everyone is to be believed, Wagner has a bad finger and pitched last night; all of these factors screamed out for Sanchez to at least begin the 9th inning! This is baseball 101, nothing mind-boggling and certainly no rational reason to break with the closer-use "rules". People can rationalize all they want about this, but it was a bad move bringing him in there and a bad move to leave him in....period.

Good for you.
But remember, more than two shakes and you're just playing with yourself.

bottom line
4 blown saves in less than 1/3 of a season is unacceptable. Sure, he can turn it around and not blow a save for the rest of the season, but this one can stick in your craw for a long time. It's the Benitez problem all over again.

I don't think Wagner gets a blown save
since it wasn't a save opportunity when he came in.  But it is a big time blown lead.  In the time of Looper, his problem was he couldn't save one run games.  He never really blew the big leads.  That's why he had the inflated save numbers.  He had no trouble in 5-2 games.

Feliciano
gets the blown save.

Thoughts
We dominated this game.
Wagner was terrible.
I question bringing Wagner in there. Bochy used to do it ALL the time with Hoffman, and Hoffman would always give up runs. Hoffman does not do well when the game is out of reach, and neither it seems, did Wagner.
He had no control.
He either needs to have surgery, or learn to deal with the pain. He can't keep blowing these things.
How badly does Pedro want to punch Wagner in the nuts right now?

Pedro must be throwing chairs in the clubhouse
He's got to be thinking, "What do I have to do to get a win here?"  He's become this years' Tom Glavine.  Glavine should have won 20 last year.

I did say bring Julio in to start the ninth before it began.  Maybe I could be manager.

After years of living in SD
I've become conditioned to hate closers coming in non-save situations.

At least the game must be tied or a big-game situation...no runners on...up by 4...adrenaline hard to come by.

I don't get it
How come the adrenaline didn't start to flow when the tying runs were on base. Your argument makes no sense. Any major league pitcher has to get three outs before 4 runs score in one inning.

It's hard to get adrenaline sometimes
Even when you are giving up the hits. Call it bad mental makeup.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
