Beltran
did well to get on base. Let's pray we can keep it close and get Webb out of the game by the 6th.

Wow, nicked the corner on the 1-0 to Delgado. Thought it was a ball, but the catcher framed it real well.

Nice job by the stache picking up the rook.
Maybe he should grow a porn stache of his own in The Stache's honor.  If he can.

Much credit to the Stache
Nice play.  He's played 19 games at 2nd in his career prior to this year.  The last one was in 1994.  Rising to the occasion at an unfamiliar position.

whats with the shift
for the stache? i havent been able to catch most of the games he's started in the past week, but is he really a pull hitter who deserves to have the shift put on?

it seems like this shift thing has gotten out of hand and they put it on for almost every lefty. pretty soon you'll start to see the jose reyes shift (bring your infielders in to back up the catcher after he swings at a ball in the dirt)

when was the last time

Beltran has a good arm and Cameron's arm was good too but I cant remember when the Mets had an outfielder who scared runners out of testing him. (I know he's not there yet, but by the looks of that throw, Milledge has the chance to be that kind of guy.)

Lighten up
It's not even clear he was asked to steal one.  For all you, or any of us know, they told him to stay put while Reyes was up.
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on May 31, 2006 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

either way, he's useless
if Willie told him not to go...that just proves his uselessness even more. willie could've pinch run Endy (who I'm sure would've at least tried to run), but can't b/c Kaz is such a shitty hitter and we might need Endy's bat later. my point is more that he's useless than that he definitely should've stole.

by big shea on May 31, 2006 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just wondering
If he attempted to steal and Reyes was fouling them off, would you still be mad at him? It's not like he really got a chance to steal.

My point is...
that I knew when Willie put him in that he would'nt steal. that is what is frustrating. since he's not starting now he is nothing but dead weight on this team. if it wasn't for his contract he's be in the minors or released by now. he's hurting the team...period.

Billy Wagner blew two of Pedro's games, didn't he? Certainly the one against the Yankees. But I think also the one against the Pirates.

by BlueYonder on May 31, 2006 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't have to cry for Pedro.
He's all about the team.  There's no way he's going to get to 300 wins anyway.  he's all about the team winning, that's the important thing.  Wins for pitchers are kind of an arbitrary stat.

by Mr. Met on May 31, 2006 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, Pedro cares mainly about the team
winning, but he also takes a lot of pride in his personal accomplishments. He was very happy to get to 200 wins. I disagree with you and think he does care about getting that W. I don't think he would have said what he did after his start against the Marlins if he didn't care about getting the W. Willie appeared to confirm that Pedro is frustrated about it. But I do agree that Pedro will be happy as long as the team wins tonight. OK, back to the game. Go Mets!

Damn
Pedro pitched 8 innings and it already seems like yesterday.

But damn
Sanchez pitched three innings with only 25 pitches.  Nice

Yeah, why not here?
I guess he doesn't trust Reyes to get the sac fly.

Willie let
Glavine bunt him to 3rd.

I think
Valentin has officially made up for his miserable April.

by anonymous on May 31, 2006 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, Valentin has really turned things around.
C'mon Mets! Yeah Hippo! Comes through on getting Valentin to 3B. I was a little worried there for a minute.

Phew
We won the marathon, the series, and some respect for Pedro's toilings.

Oh hell yeah
Back in April, maybe some of you could have predicted Valentin and Chavez as potential heroes, but I sure wouldn't have.

What a game!

valentin
made the inning by going to third on the slow grounder. Willie should have bunted but got away with it. Great win

Outfield wouldn't have
been as shallow so it is possible it would have been caught.

by udamnwright on May 31, 2006 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily.
Valentin has decent speed so they would have had to be shallow in case of a single.

by Mr. Met on May 31, 2006 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

But they would
have been deeper not saying Byrnes catches it just that it is not a given.

by udamnwright on May 31, 2006 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I bow
to Omar and his knowledge on players I Valetine was done and didn't mind Endy but later hated it when he was horrible at first subbing for Beltran.  Endy involved in both game winning rallies in this series.

Duaner gets the win
Good for him.

My fault
never even thought that way. Just went straight to thinking you meant take his job. I just am conditioned to some people being so reactionary that you almost expect it.

by udamnwright on May 31, 2006 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I really thought Endy should have started
tonight instead of Milledge. Sure, I want to see Milledge, but as a lefty and someone who obviously has more big league experience, I thought Endy was the smarter choice. Don't know if Endy could have made that throw to get Counsell out at 3B like Milledge, but he's got a great arm as well. Endy has been hitting a lot better, and his defense is sparkling -- way better than Nady's. I'd like to see him get more starts, even once Nady returns.

Glad they have a day off tomorrow
Wish I did, too.

I kept thinking of Peter Griffin:  "AAAAAAHHH!   FFSSSSSSS!   AAAAAAHHH!  FFSSSSSS!  AAAAAAHHHH!  FFSSSSSSS!"

Beltran
X-rays negative but knee swollen. Will need ice and random treatment but should be ok.

by udamnwright on May 31, 2006 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotta say
Milledge flashing the cannon in Right to Wright is one of the most hopeful defensive plays of the year.

I can see a few more of those happening. Or maybe if he mans left a few of those to home.

it was
he will reach Ichiro status soon with that arm. Accurate and strong.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

by DoctorK16 on Jun 1, 2006 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I was reminded of Ichiro on that throw
Reminded me of one Ichiro made a few years ago - can't remember the game now - just that it sailed the whole way perfectly straight and level, like it was motorized.  Amazing play.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
