it's quiet around here
the last few days.  Are we becoming complacent?  Or bored?  Does it have to do with the summer weather?  Surely there's something left to talk about, like how boring interleague play has become and how much it needs to die already, with the exception of the real rivalry matchups.

i've been sick as hell
and really busy to boot. Not bored though, this is fun :)

Things will pick up again
as we near the playoffs, if not sooner. But right now, we are contented enough; we're as much of a lock for the playoffs as we can get at this part of the year (which isn't that much of course), and there's not much to rant and rave about when even 'stache is looking major league.

I would like us to hit 15 hits this game, as our team BA is wilting a bit. But that isn't a crisis.

What are the Mets outfield assist numbers?
(Whoo-hoo!  Another lead-off double!)

Chavez and Milledge have 11 assists combined in limited play.  That's great.  Are the Mets leading the league?  If not, the "bench" must be.

Did Willie learn his lesson?
Let's see, last night, Reyes led off with a double, and LoDuca bunted.  LoDuca bunted in the bottom of the 1st with Beltran, Delgado, and Wright coming up.  Playing for one run.  In the 1st inning. Against the Reds' offense.  With your #5 starter on the mound (El Duque pitched fine, of course).  I wanted to punch out my TV screen.

Tonight, Reyes led off with a double again.  Instead of wasting LoDuca, Paulie was allowed to swing away, and the Mets got themselves a hit instead of an out, and they scored 3 runs instead of 1.  Did Willie learn his lesson?  I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.

It just keeps getting better....

by Greenpoint Ian on Jun 20, 2006 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

Hope you are right
I am not a fan of Willie-ball, and one of the reasons is that I think he sacrifices far too often.  If today's first inning is an indication that he is learning to cherish all of the 27 outs his team gets, then I'm happy.

Of course, if the game is tied in the bottom of the eight, and he has Duke bunt with Reyes on base with no outs....

by IanB in MD on Jun 20, 2006 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice start.
And for the Phils/Yanks, I have such a hard time rooting for the Yanks, even tho I want them to win.  I still find myself cheering when the Phils go and put 3 on em in the 1st.  Anyone else having conflict?

I Cheer for the Yanks
when they play the Phils (this year) and the Braves (all the time).  The only time I have trouble cheering for the Braves to lose is when they play the Sox.  In those cases, I hope their players get hurt, and I don't care who wins.

by IanB in MD on Jun 20, 2006 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes
I'm rooting for the Yanks in this series too...but I sitll find myself rooting for the Phils secretly.

by ZaBlanc on Jun 20, 2006 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't hate the Phillies enough
I tried to reason with myself that the Yankees winning would be a good thing, but my irrational sports fan side won out, so I was happy when the Phils won, and I'm happy that the Phils are winning right now.  If the Mets continue to take care of business, the Phils taking a 3-game set from the Yankees shouldn't mean much come September/October.

As for the upcoming Braves-Yankees series, I'll be satisfied knowing one of them has to lose each game.  Speaking of the Braves....go Blue Jays!

It just keeps getting better....

I'm trying to figure this out
But why is no one up in the bullpen getting warm? We're a HR away from a tie game, and a base hit from a real interesting finish to this game.

Why even give them the chance to get
back into the game?

I don't begrudge Willie letting Trachsel try for a batter...but there should have been a guy up and warming just in case. Then with two on and no outs, go right to the bullpen and maybe our lead is still 3 runs.

What, nobody wanted to comment
on Trax's HR?  Was at the game tonight - good fun.  I went in expecting us to lose vs. a young up-and-comer with good off-speed and breaking stuff, but we stomped 'em.  And X-man made a pretty definitive statement.

And Steve Trachsel hit a freakin' home run!!!

the fact that Trax worked the best AB of the game.  Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, ya damn hippies.

As I said here, and to my brother on the phone...
...Trax was doing a Kris Benson imitation.

Terrific game.  Never would have figured Steve to be the stopper.  X-man coming back with authority helped.  Willie has a damned good team this year - bench and starters.  Everynight, someone is gonna havea  good night.  Sometimes, it'll be four or five of them.  Awesome.

That's just it
Somebody commented back in April or May that this offense was "slump-proof."  So you immediately start pounding on wood but it looks pretty accurate so far.  There's just so much talent in this lineup.  and I'm really glad Nady's back to be a part of it.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
