Did you guy's read Guillen's comments?
Funny, disturbing and sad all at the same time. That guy needs to grow up.

But the comment is nothing to make a big deal about.

I'm sorry...
but a manager in the MLB should not be responding to negative criticism in the press by calling someone a fucking homo and a piece of shit. i don't see how that is acceptable.

by big shea on Jun 21, 2006 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree he doesn't take criticism very well.
My take is plenty of people, rightly or wrongly, use the term "fag" as a general put down without any reference to homosexuality.  That seems to be the context here, which is less bad than if he was actually trying to put down gay people as a whole.
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on Jun 21, 2006 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

totally unacceptable
he didn't just call the guy a fag. His statements were clearly homophobic. If he said the same about Jews or African-Americans he would have lost his job. I see no difference here.

if he said what he said
in any other workplace in the country, security would be escorting him out. I won't call for his firing, because I think this is standard clubhouse talk, but I think he should be handed a suspension like the one Pete Rose got for saying and doing what he did to Dave Pallermo back in the day.

right on
professional sports create a anti-gay environment in the clubhouse that does spread to society in general and it should be discouraged by major league baseball.

Your right

by chico on Jun 21, 2006 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean
these comments, i.e. that a sportswriter was a "fucking fag".

I think what we need most is for the gay players to come out while they're still active. It will be a little deja vu a'la Jackie Robinson, but the sport and country could really use it. Hopefully some high-Q rated All-stars are gay.

by peeder on Jun 21, 2006 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't take issue with gay ball players
But can you explain why we "need" such a thing and what use it would be for the sport and the country?
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on Jun 21, 2006 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Why did we "need" Jackie Robinson
and what use was that for the country?

by peeder on Jun 21, 2006 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure the comparison is apt
After all, before 1947 Robinson was barred from playing in the majors.  I think we can all acknowledge that gays are not barred from playing in the majors and that some are playing presently.
The question is what benefit will acrue by a player coming out while active.
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on Jun 21, 2006 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You could hide the fact you were Jewish
But a league in which everyone who was Jewish hid the fact he was Jewish would be reprehensible and something I would consider boycotting.

The benefit for the sport is that we are probably being deprived the entertainment of watching some people that would have been great players but felt their sexuality made them unacceptable.

The benefit for the country is being deprived of well-publicized evidence that gay people are worthy of great respect and celebration, including as athletes.

We have a lot of healing to do as we did in Robinson's day. After all, if Jackie could play baseball in the same stadium as the white people, maybe, just maybe, Rosa Parks could sit in the same part of the bus as the white people too.

But that time he just wasn't fast enough. Endy should always be a late inning defensive replacement for Nady.

Endy ...
Endy should always be a late inning defensive replacement for Nady.

Definitely. Too bad Endy can't always play RF and then Nady could just bat for him. Endy has gotten better with the bat, but Nady is more patient and selective, I think.

Agreed
Two outs, you should be running on the pitch, you should be almost at third when Griffey gets the ball.

With how insane Acta has been this season at times, I think he is aggressive at all the wrong times and cautious at the wrong times.

not so bad
Look, he's still an ace reliever, but he's clearly no Mariano Rivera.  It is absolutely clear that B.J. Ryan would have been a better target during this past offseason, but Ricciardi was smarter than Omar there.  I am not despairing about the Mets' bullpen yet, even if this kind of thing is traumatic.  We'll all forget about this in a day or two -- maybe sooner if the Mets can come back to win this, which isn't out of the question.

what a move by JP
can you imagine giving 45 mil to a reliever for 5 years (not mariano) and the deal actually being worth it?  it is still early in the Ryan deal, but what he has done for the Jays is amazing.  It's just over two weeks to the all-star break, and he has given up 2 runs (in 36 innings), not yet blown a save, and given up 14 hits in 36 innings!  (and 8 walks to 42 Ks sure bodes well for him going forward).  If you replace Ryan with a league-average closer, the Jays are like 7 or 8 games back.

of course, the Burnett thing hasn't worked out too well yet.

What's the point of having such a high SB %
if you can't swipe one in the big spot? i don't get why you wouldn't use one of your best attributes.

however, Beltran has been awesome this season and Billy really has been kinda terrible.

was the take on?
I can understand running with Delgado up. But as I figured he would steal with Wright up. This one is on Wags though.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

no real sweat
still have a big, big lead. Most teams do have trouble with closer, but I thought we solved it this year. Doesn't look like we have. It's not only the blown saves it's how Billy blows them. It's completely mental. He had two stikes on Phillips and then he fouled a high fastball off and Wagner grooved one. If he can't put the guy away he seems to lose it and give up

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
