Open Thread - Game 79: Mets vs Yankees (06/30/2006) on SNY

Subway Series. Interesting fact: the Yankees have more payroll on the disabled list than at least three big league teams have on their entire 40-man roster.

Let's go Mets!

First post ...
Go Mets!

Also, if anyone notices and is confused, all my old posts now have "BlueYonder" on them, since that was the first name I used here. (I'm not a pilot but love to fly; hence the name.) Anyway, I later changed my name to "Max in NJ," and that's what it still is. But Eric had to work some magic to get me my old BlueYonder ID# back.

Thanks a million, Eric!

Go El Duque! We were able to score 4 runs off Moose before. Let's do even better tonight.

since it's hard right now to say something
positive about Mets. I will tell you I caught a Binghamton Mets game and liked what I saw from Henry Owens. He throws 93-95 with movement. Think he's ready for the show. Also saw Michel Abreu hit two homers. He does lead Eastern League in average. If they can't help Mets then maybe they can use them as chips in a deal

Mets in one of those periods
were every mistake hurts them and every little thing is done wrong.  Defense makes every play against them, every steal ends up leading to a run, outs on the bases, etc, etc

yeah
I think they also may have lost a little mental focus with the big lead in the division. This is where Willie I think should shine and get them back on track.

The worst possible thing

I try to stay out of these things
unless I'm directly involved, but Eli, man, there was no point to your post other than to bait jonboy. I appreciate the different perspectives that different people bring to this site, but it seems that you just like to pick fights.

Jonboy is one of the most insightful posters here. I try to be, but by game time, I usually have little brain power left. And if it's my night to tuck in the kiddies, then my brain is rehashing (involuntarily) stories like "Alexander and the no-good, horrible, very bad day" or "If you give a mouse a cookie." The first time I read that story to my oldest son, I laughed and said, "If you give a mouse a cookie, he'll hit it out of the park!" But I digress.

Anyway, Eli, you've got yourself this persona now of being "the negative guy." Maybe that's just the kind of guy you are. OK, we can deal with that. But knock off the baiting.

final comment
everybody take a deep breath. every team goes thru tough stretches. Interleague games are the most hyped and most meaningless. I wish they would do away with them. The problem with Mets is that when they came back from that great road trip they believed those stupid headlines about how great they were. In the long run, this will be a good thing. It shows Minaya that he can't stand pat if he wants to get far in the post-season and it should put an end to the who will win the MVP award instead and re-emphasize the how we win the game mindset. Good night JonBoy I love you.

first time this season
I guess it's a good thing when the last day of June is the first time I've been pissed at the team collectively all season (not you, Duq, you did fine).  Losses happen.  Sweeps happen, especially against a surging team like Boston.  But to manage one freakin' hit against the losers in the middle of the Yankees bullpen is embarrasing.

I've been to 7 games this year and was pumped and confident before all of them, including 3 against Atlanta back when we thought the Braves were good.  I'm going tomorrow, and for the first time, I'm apprehensive.  I've got the "I hope we don't lose" feeling instead of the "I think we're gonna win" feeling.  That Pittsburgh series (and the all-star break) is sorely needed right now.

Not trying to bicker with anyone, it's just the way I feel right now.

It just keeps getting better....

No doubt the Mets need to refocus. No doubt the Mets need to develop or acquire a new 5th starter. No doubt Dontrelle Willis--when his stock was tanking--is now probably untouchable at a "just get him off our Florida payroll" trade level. No doubt the Mets have to figure out what to do with Keppinger--26 and rotting in the minors, losing value. No doubt I'll be happy when real NL baseball starts again--I can't stand DH AL regular season ball, a travesty to MLB. No doubt a good NL team with momentum and focus and scouting can beat any AL team in October--and it should be the Mets this October. No doubt Reyes is the catalyst and Wright is the clutch guy. Homegrown always adds that extra zip and pride. These guys are good--dinged a bit with LoDuca and Floyd and Delgado and Nady--that does lead to being 1-hit. Let's not "Beltran" the team; they'll rebound, and they're the best group to watch in a long time.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
