just saw from Eric's pregame comments it was Soler. might not make it back if maine can continue to pitch well.

Aside from not pitching well,
Soler also has some sort of calf strain.

Joe Morgan
wat did Ron say about him?

by chico on Jul 3, 2006 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

i think it was
something about the "2nd baseman in the booth second guessing". I was in the kitchen with my back turned to the TV and SNY sound quality on my cable system quite frankly sucks, so I might have misheard.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 3, 2006 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

that was the gist...
Gary and Ron pointing out that Willie most likely didn't pull Soler for Oliver b/c the plan was for Oliver to start tonight. Ron said that Morgan made it worse by the constant short-sighted second guessing by Morgan.

Maine actually up to 58
pitches through 3, despite only giving up 1 hit. Seems like these Pirates have fouled off a lot of pitches, and Maine has gotten into a few too many deep counts. Still, good job so far. Hopefully he can have a quick inning here.

by Max in NJ on Jul 3, 2006 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

he needs a put away pitch
he gets ahead but he doesn't have that killer pitch to end ab. Still he proves Tom Seaver right, most important pitch in baseball is strike 1.

In Maine's defense, I think
Willie should have gotten Oliver up earlier. Maine had no choice but to keep on pitching even though he had nothing left.

by Max in NJ on Jul 3, 2006 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

But yeah, I agree with Eli above
i.e. that Maine (or any starter) needs to be able to give us 5 innings at least. I didn't expect more than that out of him tonight. He gave us 4 2/3. At least he didn't give up a grand slam.

that's what I mean
they emphasize pitch count early in career. Don't know if they have done studies that too many pitches causes arm problems, but guys who pitched when I was kid, Marichal, Drysdale, Gibson and Seaver threw 2o plus complete games a year. Don't remember too many guys destroying their arms pitching complete games or on three days rest. Don't think anatomy has changed in the last 30 years.

Denny McLean, Mark Fidrich
come to mind. Pitch counts are protecting the investment you make in young pitchers, which now is in the millions of dollars.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 3, 2006 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Denny McClain
drank and caroused himself out of baseball, not a victim of arm problem. Hard to know if Fidrych's sad demise resulted from pitching too many innings. Forgot to mention Nolan Ryan on last post.

It is intuitive that throwing too many innings will cause arm problems, but I'm not convinced it is true. I loved seeing shutouts and complete games and not crazy about seeing mediocore middle relievers

by elifriedman on Jul 3, 2006 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

McLean
lifestyle was A-OK before he got hurt and he did get hurt. And it is intuitive that more pitches = more strain on the arm. Some guys can handle a lot of it others can't. Where would Pedro be if there weren't pitched counts, probably getting tommy john

just to get juices flowing I am proud to inform you that all-star Kazmir has shutout through 8 with 9Ks against the weak hitting Red Sox. Not only isn't he pitching for Mets but he helps Yanks by killing Boston.

Although we have failed to score
with RISP over and over in this game, I think it's tough for the hitters when the pitchers put them in such a hole, especially late in the game. Bradford has done well for us, but he didn't have it tonight. And it's tough on the bullpen when we have starting pitching problems. I don't think we can solve our starting pitching problems from within. I don't know who Omar could get ... but as DocMet16 said, I'm now officially worried about our pitching.

by Max in NJ on Jul 3, 2006 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

well I didn't go to sleep yet

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
