Sanchez
Is there an update on his condition, i.e., not out for an extended period, or do you mean that he wasn't injured worse?

by OronosFemur on Aug 1, 2006 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

"All right" meaning alive
He's officially out for the season.
"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

by Billy Everyteen on Aug 1, 2006 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

So it looks more and more
as though it wasn't the Sanchez injury that kept the Mets from picking up a starting pitcher.  Over at SI, John Heyman says that the Mets were fully prepared to pull the trigger on either one of a deal for Schmidt or for Oswalt, but their potential partners balked at the last minute.

That confirms what I've been seeing elsewhere - and, particularly interestingly, that it was Peter Angelos' inexplicable last-minute refusal to deal Tejada that bunged up the Oswalt deal.

So maybe not everything can be blamed on that stupid drunk in Miami.

We should still totally kick his ass, though.

and here we have
exhibit A in favor of Xavier Nady's defense.  He's not making rookie mistakes like that ball Milledge let fall anymore.  The difference is Milledge will get better.

Lastings' Defense
I expect by October that he'll be an upgrade over what we got from Nady, but man does he seem to have problems focusing in the field at this point.

for his jaw? Or is it really something to keep him from sticking his tongue out?

by Max in NJ on Aug 1, 2006 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

OK, yeah, I just looked it up for myself
Pelfrey wears that mouth guard because he has a misaligned jaw from getting struck by a line drive a couple of years ago. Supposedly the mouth guard he wore in college protected his tongue, but he said he's always stuck it out unconsciously. I don't see the big deal. Well, I guess some people will be offended by anything, but sheesh.

Beltran hit a would be triple
Reyes was on first.  He slipped rounding third and fell, forcing him to retreat to third.  Meanwhile Beltran had rounded second on the assumption that Reyes would score.  Throw was cutoff and relayed to second where Beltran was hung up.

not real crazy about Wagner
but he has been solid lately. a bit disturbing that he lost the game on three  piches-reminded me of Looper on Opening Day 2005.  It's pretty tough getting up for these games with such a big lead then turn it up for the playoffs.

I heard that Milledge turned his back on Willie in dugout when he tried to talk to him. I really hate that armor he wears on his elbow. Did show great discipline with the 3 walks, but his attitude is a bit disconcerting. Also disconcerted some bloggers have been accusing people who question Lastings attitude of being racist. That is pure bullshit.

What is the big deal with the armor?
Geez, I heard those Florida announcers pissing and moaning about that too.  If the guy can still hit and can protect himself from getting hurt, what's wrong with that?  I wish they would all wear it, if it doesn't affect their swings.  And why should only veterans be permitted to wear it?  Give me a break.  People get ALL worked up over the slightest little things.  If it was me up there I'd be wearing a full suit of the stuff, like I was getting ready for a joust or something.

Milo
As a an African-American I am starting to wonder about Milo's treatment. I won't go as far to say all of is race related, but I think its a factor in how he perceived. Its seems that people are comparing to him Straw and Doc and he has never had a drug issue of anykind. Also, people are still talking about some bullshit that happened when he was 16 years old, that he was never even charged with a crime for. As for the stuff with Willie, it looked like Milo was just walking in the dugout with while talking to Willie. He had to prepare to hit in the bottom of the second as he was due up third. I didn't get the impression that Willie felt shown up, he could have just confronted him or pull him from the game. Everything is blown up with this kid, he won't be the first kid to think he rules the world at 21, Jason Isringhausen did simaler stuff when he came up at that age and nobody said a word that I can remember. I can't help to wonder that people would just be laughing this shit off under different circumstances, instead of blowing it up like this.

I'm sensitive to your sensitivity, but don't see this as a race issue. Hell, Kazmir was traded in part because of his supposedly bad attitude and he is White and Benson was jettisoned because of his White wife's  attitude.  I don't think they should trade the kid because of this (see Kevin Mitchell), but it's something that should be watched by Willie

Kazmir /Benson
was traded because the team had a certain members of the team, with over inflated egos(Franco, Leiter) problem with his attitude and the Wilpon/Duquette defered to their bullshit point of view, a place we haven't gottem with Milledge yet. Benson was traded because his wife, was trashing members of the team in print for their political stands creating a potential problem in the clubhouse. I haven't heard word on about LM causing clubhouse problems.

you missed my point
you analogized to  Izzy's behavior not being questioned in the context of a racial double-standard. I was pointing out that White players also have their attitudes questioned. I forgot about Shane Spencer who was banished from the team for alcoholism.

and you missed mine
my point is that Benson and Kazmir issues, rightly or wrongly caused issues with their teammates, something that hasn't happened with Milledge. But people aren't even even waiting for the team to have a problem with LM, their already bitching about his attitude. Shane Spencer got banished because he drove drunk on a rehab assignment, for an injury he sustained in a bar, he committed a crime, something that Milo hasn't done.

In fact, wearing that crap on your arm probably gives you a false sense of security, making you crowd the plate and get hit with more pitches. Floyd wears it and he gets hit in all other parts of his body. It would be refreshing to hear you make a comment that is not sophmoric

You're the one who brought up the face mask
idea, there, Mr. Maturity.

If you're trying to suggest that NO players
should be allowed to wear protection, not just Milo, that's fine.  It's a defensible point of view.  I didn't hear you saying that, though, I just heard you being unrefreshingly critical of some random Met who ran afoul of your high standards in some fashion.

Well,
I am against all players wearing such protection and have said so on previous occasion. I thought that Lastings set of armor was particularly large and obnoxious. I accept the positon of Keith Hernandez, a former hitter, over yours on this. He certainly has more credibility.

Sorry eli, my bad.
I'll be sure to research your personal history of everything you've ever said before I respond to one of your posts.  I only heard the Florida announcers so I missed Keith, but yeah, I guess if Keith says something, it must be true.  He'd never say something totally ridiculous based on some kind of troglodytic traditional overly machismo point of view.

you're wrong Mr. Met
My 14 year old daughter plays a mean game of softball and I have advised her not to wear elbow protectors when she bats. I'm not sexist on this point and you are the first to accuse me of being overly macho. I love "troglodytic." You must have done very well on the verbal section of the SATs.

before this goes any further
I don't think Mr. Met was calling your attitude "overly macho," Eli.  I'm pretty sure that's just a reference to Keith's rant about women in the dugout, which would fall under the category of ridiculous statements.  He merely was trying to undercut your deference to Keith on the armor issue.

Body armor is a good argument, guys, but I think we can have it without resorting to personal attacks (intentional or otherwise).  Not that I don't find it all very entertaining, haha.

And THAT
is why they call him the king.

Let's just agree to disagree on the body armor, issue, eli.

Milo needs to find his way, just like all immensely talented but socially awkward young people.  Give him some slack, he'll be ok.

don't know if yuu're gonna read this
but my previous post described my respect for Lastings style and talent. I think he will be fine and my criticism of the body armor wasn't directly exclusively towards him.  I do get the sense that Willie is a stickler regarding discipline and that Lastings presents a challenge for him.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
