Magic Number Clinchy Date Pool

[editor's note, by kingcritical] Moved from the diaries.

Okay folks, Mr. Met made the suggestion so what the hell.

I think the regular "Game Chatters" will be familiar with the Magic Number posts I've been putting up for a while now. So, whaddya say? When's Clinchy Day?

Here's where we stand at the moment:

Thursday evening, August 10
Mets Magic Numbers (49 GL) (W vs. SD, 7-3)
Philadelphia     36 (49) (off)
Florida             33 (49) (at Wash. - in progress)
Atlanta            33 (49) (off)
Washington      31 (49) (vs. Fla. - in progress)

Star-divide

For the record, I picked September 13. Winner gets a case of notoriety (unless someone has a better idea). I'm going to be away until next Wednesday or Thursday, so if anyone wants to set a cutoff date or have fun with this, go for it.

I'll take Sunday, Sept. 17
At beautiful PNC Park, and despite the valiant efforts of the X-Man.

Also, I already had a case of notoriety
I had to use a special cream to make it go away.

I say we put some beer money in this pool.

I'm game...
...but we should probably add a tiebreaker. No good ideas here, serious case of Mental Oatmeal. I reserve the right to pick mine when I get back.
Ya gotta believe, baby... BELIEVE!

Nice work, Tug!
I think I'll go with September 15th, at Pittsburgh, because it would be nice to take our minds off the 9/11 hoopla.

I'm avoiding the 11th
primarily because I want no part of its other connotations, but I'll still be optimistic and take the last game at Florida on September 13th.  The way I figure it, the Mets will clinch around the 17th (I didn't bother to figure out the number of off days exactly) if they and the teams below them play .500 ball the rest of the way (or otherwise produce equivalent records).  I expect the Mets to continue to outperform the rest of the teams in the division at least slightly, so I'll go a bit earlier.

Monday, Sept. 18; Fish at Shea
This feels like bad karma, but whatever...

As a tiebreaker, I'll pick 6 total runs in the clinching game.

9/16
In pittsburgh. The same day as 1986.

Good call.
Wish I'd thought of that.  You deserve a tiebreaker win for best reason for picking a certain date.

Semantics
Though technically on 9/16 the mets clinched at least a tie. On 9/17 the mets clinched without a doubt. I stand by the 9/16 date! Simon discussed prizes awhile back, maybe when he comes back he will have something to offer for this little pool.

Ruh-roh
Good point.  We're talking here about clinching full-out, right?  Not the tie.

9/14 @ Bandbox in Philly
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

Quick hook for Traber
if you can call it that in the 8th, but only 82 pitches.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
