lefty
thats why, it doesn't even matter as Woody 2B. Their must be some magic pixie dust on the mound in Oakland, both Hudson and Mulder are awful right now.

I heard Gary say Green
will be our new regular right-fielder. However, I hope Willie won't start Green against left-handed pitchers. I know Milledge has been struggling, but I hope he gets the starts against lefties, as he is tonight against Mulder. (I realize Green isn't with the team yet.)

Oh yeah, and go Mets! Go Woody!

scary thing about that
was that the Cardinals were so good in 2000 that they won the playoff game he started against Atlanta.

by anonymous on Aug 23, 2006 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

they only have a 1.5 game lead
on the reds, at the start of this game. I am hoping they lose that position, it would be great to avoid winnie the pooh holes in the playoffs.

by thekid on Aug 23, 2006 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

If they lose the lead
They are more likely to face us in the postseason as we get the Wild Card team in the first round, which I would figure to be the Cardinals in your scenario.
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on Aug 23, 2006 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah
One way or another I think we face the Cards in the playoffs.  But I'm okay with that.  Pujols is scary, but the rest of the team, not so much.

It's a pipe dream
but I am hoping the Pads keep winning and creep into that Wild Card Spot. Only  1.5 out right now.

by thekid on Aug 23, 2006 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Why are you hoping that?
Because of Piazza? Or because we're so good at beating the Pads? Or both?

by Max in NJ on Aug 23, 2006 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Two reasons
  1. I think we match up extremly well against the Pads. Which has been proven over the season.
  2. I live in SD, which means I get to go to playoff games.

Seriously, how terrible must St. Louis' starting pitching be if they threw Mulder out there tonight despite the fact that he's clearly not 100%?

Honestly, for all the bitching and fretting we've all done about the Mets starting pitching this season, I'd take it any day over any other team we're likely to face in the playoffs (at least from the NL).

We're at the point in the season now
where we're demoralizing teams trying to compete.  I live in Denver, and they're still talking about how devastating their trip to NY was, how it showed the depth of their problems, etc.  They were on the verge of the WC before the trip, now they're pretty much out, and certainly have no confidence they can win.  Hopefully we can lay that same kind of smackdown to the Cardinals.

Thank God
and Billy Wagner.

Losing tonight after going up 10-2 would have been the Anti-August 22.

"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

whew!
That was closer than it should have been.

Let's send the Cards a message by pounding Staten Island's own Jason Marquis tomorrow.  Then, we'd basically have 2 more "send a message" type series left: this weekend against Philadelphia and the 4 games when LA comes to town.

What a luxury it is
to have opened up a big division lead in April, and kept it up all season.  Looking thru the comments over at Viva El Birdos, it reminds me of how lucky we are not to be agonizing over every game in quite the same way that fans of most other contending teams have to.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
