Wright Signed
David Wright signed a 6-year contract extension today for $55 million.  The left side of the infield is locked up for awhile.

Yesterday was a gift win.
We could have easily lost if not for shabby play by the Phillies that one inning. We were fortunate not to have dropped 3 games in a row. So, here's hoping the bats come alive again (and especially with RISP), we play sharp defense and John Maine gives us another good start. I don't expect him to continue his streak of scoreless innings -- just give us 7 innings and keep us in the game. Go Mets!

Interesting that when they interviewed Willie
and asked him how he felt about his starting pitching, he said he was really pleased with it, and named everybody except Trax.

by Mr. Met on Aug 6, 2006 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Good.
Willie's learning.  Trax is a trooper, and I'll always like him.  But he is NOT someone I want to see starting anytime soon, especially come October.  Maine is making me feel better, though.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."

yes please
i'll take him.

by The Wright Stuff on Aug 6, 2006 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

but...
you have to be a little concerned about his extreme ground/fly ratio on balls in play.  I am pretty confident in Maine at this point, too, but I'd like to see him succeed in a homer-friendly stadium or two before I'm completely sold.

What about Marrero?
Other than not being Kaz Matsui, does he have anything going for him?
"The Mets with the bases loaded: Chavez, great speed, Reyes, great speed, Lo Duca, good guy."

by Mr. Met on Aug 6, 2006 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Not really
Not since he left Colorado and not since he turned however old he is.  He can catch in a tough spot, though.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."

by wrightHOF on Aug 6, 2006 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Marrero
Has a few things going for him.
  • He can catch.  Of course the recent call up of Mike DiFelice seems to indicate they don't particularly want him to do so.
  • He's defensively versatile.  In addition to catching he can play all three OF spots as well as first and third.  Combined with Chris Woodward you've got all the defensive spots backed up with just two players.
  • He's got some power.  With a bench of Gramps, Woody, Hippo, and Endy its nice to have a home run threat on the bench.
  • No one is looking over his shoulder at him.  No one's role is jeopardized by his presence on the team.
So there are four reasons.  Of course, they are all weak reasons.  I expect he'll be replaced on the playoff roster with a lefty batter provided Castro comes back 100%.
The nye Mets are my favorite squadron.

by LAwman on Aug 6, 2006 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice
very detailed

I dont about the playoff roster spot, I think he'll be there still

by chico on Aug 6, 2006 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah thanks LAwman
I agree with you that none of those is compelling.  Omar's probably watching the waiver wire pretty closely for that left-handed bat.

I just noticed that
under Probable Pitchers, the Mets' official site calls Pedro a "veteran lefty." It would be cool if he were ambidextrous. He could start a whole new career.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
