I know the Mets are just talking now, but after the Torrealba signing, shit like this terrifies me.  If Minaya lets Castillo go in order to spend 36 MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS on David Eckstein, I may disown the Mets.

it can't be true
Omar has shown no sign of having sustained a massive head trauma in the last few weeks.  This kind of deal could only be the result of massive organic brain damage, so I think we're safe.

Seriously, Torrealba was maybe a slight miscalculation, a minor overspend and a somewhat suboptimal choice about which player to pursue in a poor market, but it wasn't certifiable batshit insanity like that rumor would be.

Unbelievable...
Why!?  WHY!?!? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?!?

Would it be so terrible to let Gotay platoon with Easley?

by SQUAD on Nov 17, 2007 9:11 PM EST reply actions

well, according to Marty Noble...
I shit you not:

"Despite the games missed, Eckstein is widely recognized as one of baseball's foremost gamers."

And:

"The Mets may see him as source of the grit and resolve their team lacked last season, and may hope Eckstein would provide some of the fire Paul Lo Duca provided in his two seasons as their catcher."

Read the rest of the story and weep.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

good lord
Are there any more cliches about Eckstein and the Mets collapse that could have been jammed into that article?

Yeah, it was a lack of grit and fire that caused the bullpen to implode this past season.  Who knew that Chad Bradford was so gritty and gamer-y?

Keep A-Rod in New York! Bring him to Queens!!!

DePodesta for next GM
Let's start a petition.

Funny thing is, I like Omar, but he has made some dubious moves in the past year.

Minaya
I seriously have no idea what to think of him at this point.  The trades that brought in Hernandez, Perez, and Maine suggested a GM who had an eye for picking up undervalued talent for next to nothing.  At the same time, he wants to spend absurd amounts of money on mediocre-to-awful players like Eckstein and Torrealba.

What's going on in the Mets front office?

Keep A-Rod in New York! Bring him to Queens!!!

Eck. 2 World Series Trophies in 6 yrs Mets have 0
Okay. So you say Eckstein won't be a good edition. Well lets think this through. How many World Series titles in the last 6 years do the Mets Have???? let me think 0. How many does David have 2. To have David on your Team, he will bring motivaton because he plays the game the way it should be played. David's not a power hitter, but he gets on base and gets things started. That's why he also has a MVP World Series trophy, and that what the Mets see. 9 million a year in Baseball these days isn't much to ask for look at A-Rod $250 million that crazy.

Dear Sir,
Your inflated respect for David Eckstein is based on a selective and ill-informed view of what makes baseball players valuable.  Not everyone on a World Series-winning team's roster is equally responsible for the team's success, and there are far better measures than the trophy case to determine who is most responsible for helping a team win.  By any of these measures, David Eckstein is an overpaid, inferior player.  Please consider supplementing your opinion with some facts.  And you might also think about proofreading your grammar, spelling, and punctuation before posting.

Sincerely,

The Committee for the Reduction of Bullshit and Encouragement of Sensible Discourse

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
