Open Thread - Game 3: Mets vs Cardinals (04/04/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Another 8:10 start tonight, as the Mets go for the season-opening series sweep. They send John Maine to the hill against *chortle* Braden Looper. Looper has made a grand total of zero starts in his big league career, which dates back to 1998 when he broke in with the Cardinals. As a reliever, Looper has a career 3.57 ERA (118 ERA+), which doesn't necessarily make him a terrific candidate to become a starter. Then again, working exclusively in relief for eight full seasons before making your first career start isn't really a terrific idea in the first place. Of course, last season mediocre starting pitchers were like kryptonite to the Mets' offense, so maybe Drunky McSleepsalot is on to something here.

The Mets already have the series in hand, so a win tonight would be gravy. Also, if Looper makes it out of this start with an ERA lower than 9 I think I'll be really disappointed in this offense.

First in!
Let's go Mets!

I won't be live-commenting, or whatever we call it, but I'll have the game on the radio.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Loaded with lefties
With Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Green, and Valentin in there, I'd have to imagine we'll pound Loopy tonight.  I wouldn't mind giving Alou a day off and starting Endy out there either, considering Alou is 0/12 vs Looper in his career, while Endy is 3/7.  Not a big sample size but he obviously sucks vs left handers.

Dammit
Why can't I give this comment a 4?

I'm stealing that pic, btw. Unless you promise to continue posting it on a regular basis.

"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

by Billy Everyteen on Apr 4, 2007 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Blooper's career split line:
vs. righties: .234/.297/.306/.603
vs. lefties:  .306/.372/.464/.836

Endy sounds like a good idea tonight, especially seeing as I'd be very surprised to see him pitch his best for multiple innings.

When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."

by wrightHOF on Apr 4, 2007 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Also
now that I remember, Looper always grimiced this ugly ugly face before pretty much every pitch, as if he was summoning all his strength.  If he had to do that for 1 inning outings, he'll probably be grunting like a female tennis player by the 3rd.  He best not last much longer than that.

Gotta meeting
Might miss the first few innings. I'm worried Mr. Met might overtake me in the game thread comments standings. Maybe I should set up a bot. I could just have it keep repeating: "Bench Shawn Green already."

Or maybe, "HAHAHA FUCK YOU LOOPER."

Looper
I don't care about sweeping the Cards, I only care about destroying Looper today. Every opening day for the rest of my life I will remember the walk-off he gave up against the Reds two years ago. I was so happy about the whole game until that. Then I knew the season was over after game one.

One more time
OK, one more game comment thread in which we talk about Eckstein's grit.  I've noticed over at Viva El Birdos, they talk about Jose Reyes being "exciting".

Now, while I love ragging on the dumb things said by baseball announcers as much as the next guy (and dwelling on Eckstein's "grit" or Reyes' "excitement" certainly can get annoying), there's one big difference between Reyes and Eckstein.  Reyes is good. Heh heh!

see, i did come back. we won 2-1. i went to the sin bin twice for roughing and unsportsmenlike conduct. i've always played chippy, but now i'm just mean.

Nice
I already added the comments from the thread so that last one doesn't count, but you still had a hell of a night.

thanks eric
i'd like to thank a steady supply of stimulants and stress hormones. also, john maine and braden looper both pitched well and i'd rather chat during a pitching duel than a blowout.

cards defense was deplorable.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
