Owings
is actually the pitcher who scares me the second-worst, after Webb, on this team.  With the Mets' past inability to deal with young never-before-faced pitchers, and the talk about his talent, he might be a problem.  The zombie Unit and the pudgy Livan are certainly not anything to get too worried about.

by anonymous on May 3, 2007 9:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah
Plus, for whatever reason, the Mets have always clobbered Randy Johnson, even in his prime (remember the 1999 division series?).

The last two years of Yankees series just reinforced that.

This lineup makes the most sense.
I hope Willie sticks with it.

though
it might be better to bat Beltran 2nd and Wright 3rd considering Beltran's superior career numbers out of the 2-hole.  (Disclaimer: I do not care about lineups.  Just posting to foment discussion.)

whichever
Either way, the important thing is getting LoDuca out of the 2 hole, where he's a liability if he isn't hitting .320.  Both Wright and Beltran are high OBP guys and both belong near the top of the lineup.

Neck injuries
Today I have a neck sprain.  Does this happen at all in baseball?  I've never seen a pulled neck muscle or sprained neck on an injury report...

And Mr. Met, I love the word "palooka."  Thought you should know.

But my sympathies are with him on this, for I now know that pulling one's neck sucks golf balls out of garden hoses.

While having what Howie Rose aptly described as a "nightmare" ninth inning, Valverde's pouty demeanor seemed almost -- dare I say it? -- Benitezesque.

his pitching approach was certainly
Bentiez like. But honestly I don't remember Armando pouting on the mound like he did. Just overthrowing a lot and not locating. Matter of fact he would always pound his chest to say "I got this"

really?
I certainly think I can remember times that Armando got progressively worse and worse with the petulant body language as he missed a few calls at the corners.  And what came after the nibbling and pouting was exactly the same as Armando at his worst -- batting practice fastball.

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
