Game 1: Mets 9, Diamondbacks 4

Tom Glavine's pitching line:

Hardly a terrible game for Glavine, but he did a particularly bad job of keeping the Diamondbacks off the board when the Mets scored. After falling behind 1-0, the Mets took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, only to have Glavine give it back in the fifth on Chris Snyder's two-run homerun. Carlos Beltran tied the game at three in the top of the sixth with a mammoth homerun that the D-Backs announcer could only describe as "Oh my goodness", but Glavine coughed up a bomb to Orlando Hudson to put the Diamondbacks on top again. The Mets prevailed on Damion Easley's ninth inning homerun (with an assist from Tony Clark's bronze glove).

John Maine's pitching line:

Maine tossed another terrific game on Friday, allowing just seven baserunners in six innings while striking out seven. Maine allowed just one earned run, which actually increased his league-leading ERA to 1.37. Carlos Delgado had the night off, but Julio Franco went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homerun and a stolen base. Franco is hitting just .231 on the year, which is still about 30 points higher than Delgado at this point. You hear a lot about people worrying about Delgado, about whether he is going to be able to break out of his slump. I can't say that I'm worried and, though some offensive decline is to be expected with another ring around his trunk, such a precipitous decline would be wholly unlikely. Having said that, I sure wish he would get his act together sooner rather than later.

Interesting that Damion Easley gets "Mr. Regret" a night after winning the game for the Mets.

Game 3: Mets 6, Diamondbacks 2

Jorge Sosa's pitching line:

Surprise, surprise. Jorge Sosa makes his Mets debut and he doesn't completely suck things up. In fact, he was good. Very good. He ultimately allowed two runs in 6.1 innings, but Joe Smith actually let those runs in, and only after Endy Shirt misplayed a deep flyball into a double. Gun to my head, I didn't think I'd be saying this a few days ago, but Sosa deserves another start. What's more, he probably deserves several more starts. At the very least, I think he deserves to start until either (a) El Duque comes back, or (b) he pitches lousy in two of three appearances. El Duque was originally slated to come off the disabled list on Friday, but now it doesn't look like that's going to happen. It's hard to get too excited about just one start from Sosa, but he *was* exceptional at Triple-A, so his success in this one big league game didn't take everyone completely by surprise. A bigger question may be this: If Sosa somehow continues to pitch well and Mike Pelfrey continues to pitch like dreck, would the Mets send Pelfrey down to New Orleans when Orlando Hernandez returns?

Mike Pelfrey's pitching line:

Pelfrey probably pitched well enough to win most games. Unfortunately for Pelfrey and the Mets, he wasn't quite good enough to win this particular game. To be fair, that was mostly because Livan Hernandez pitched pretty well and the Mets' offense hit pretty poorly. Not helping matters was the fact that the Mets were playing quite a few of their bench players in lieu of their regulars. David Newhan got his first start of the season, and Endy Shirt and Ruben Gotay were each in the starting lineup as well. Endy went 2-for-4, but Newhan and Gotay combined to go 0-for-7 with a walk.

The biggest news of the day was Lino Urdaneta, who appeared in relief and retired two batters without allowing any to score. This was a nice change for Urdaneta, who had only one big league appearance prior to Sunday: A 2004 game with Detroit in which he allowed six runs on five hits and a walk while recording zero outs for an ERA of infinity. Or, according to ESPN.com's supercomputers, 162.00. Thanks to those two outs yesterday, Urdaneta has trimmed his career ERA to a svelte 81.00. So kudos to Lino, and congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Urdaneta, who must be the proudest parents in Venezuela tonight.
