nice comparison
But really it's the difference between their 2015 salaries that will tell the story of these two pitchers (and their agents!).  Seriously, we all knew Zito's deal was insane from minute 1, but he's still a decent pitcher, and Ollie is still the less likely of the two to continue his current level of performance for the full season.

Phew! I was so scared.
Now.  Bake this, Zito.

Flashing some leather at the age of 40.  Can't wait to see Franco hit a ball near him -- guaranteed to be the oldest combo on a flashy play at short ever.

Vizquel
The guys are talking about his HOF candidacy. Despite the gold gloves, he's a .275/.341/.359 career hitter in an era of offensive explosion. He has 2,500 hits, but that's largely a product of playing 19 seasons. He gets some props for longevity, but to be enshrined as a baseball immortal? I'm not sure I see it. At least, based on the modicum of research I bothered doing.

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2007 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

well
guys like Ozzie and even though its silly Mazoriski are in for their defense, then I think Vizquel has a legit case. An average hitter was phenomenal with his glove. D is part of the game.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on May 7, 2007 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Ozzie
Ozzie Smith is the greatest defensive player at any position in the history of the sport, and it isn't even really close. Vizquel is a very good defensive player. If we use offense as an analogy, we're comparing Babe Ruth to, oh I don't know, Fred Lynn?

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2007 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

this maybe
true. But we don't have a easy well known metric to measure Vizquel D relative to Smith. So a lot of his subjective. Personally I think he ends up getting in as kind a protest to "Steroid Era" emphasis on offense.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on May 7, 2007 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

no no no no no no no no way.
Omar Vizquel is the very definition of "nice player but not a Hall of Famer."  And Ozzie should never have been allowed into the Hall, not because he wasn't arguably eligible as the best defensive SS ever, but because it's such a stupid, dangerous precedent to allow.  Now for the rest of time we have to hear arguments about how Player X couldn't hit that well, but neither could Ozzie.

by anonymous on May 7, 2007 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

here's the deal
Defense is part of the game. How big is a part of the game. 30%?20%?10%? we need to quantify this so we know how to value in things like HOF discussions.   Another guy who has argument in this regard is the guy calling this game tonight.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on May 7, 2007 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

how big?
It seems to me like we may not have an exact quantitative answer to this (though we're not too far from it, actually) -- but we (serious baseball fans) already have a lot of pretty decent gut instincts.  And my intuition is: defense is nice, great defense is very nice, as icing on a cake that's rich in other ingredients, but no way does it make up for any serious inability in hitting.  Ozzie gets some extra credit, fine.  Rey Ordoñez starts coming up in the discussion, not so good.  Omar Vizquel has the misfortune to have played shortstop in the eras of Ripken, Rodriguez, and Jeter (textbook exhibit C-for-Captain for the "defense doesn't really matter" side).  That makes him very much not a Hall of Famer.

by anonymous on May 7, 2007 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Keith
The difference is that Keith Hernandez was a terrific offensive player for a number of years, and was by far the best player in his league in one (1979, despite Pops robbing him of half of his rightful MVP award). Vizquel has been an above average offensive player (using OPS+) exactly once, in 1999 when he had an OPS+ of 111, and he has an OPS+ of 85 for his career.

By comparison, Hernandez was better than average every year of his career, and had an OPS+ of 129 for his career. The Vizquel/Hernandez comparison is not an apt one, IMHO.

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2007 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

right
Keith is a way better hitter than Vizquel. But he isn't a masher in the mold of say McCovey, Thomas, Bagwell or even Delgado. People will hold that against him in HOF discussion, but how much does his defense mitigate that. Also, prior to say Ripken, it was common for SS not be a great hitters, esp. for power. So is fair to hold Vizquel up the A-Rod standard.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
