Mets Comings and Goings

Marty Noble gives us the scoop in his latest Mets.com opus. Lots of tidbits crammed into this piece, including:

  • Howard Johnson will almost certainly inherit most of Rick Down's hitting coach duties.
  • Lastings Milledge has been recalled for tonight's game and will likely be the everyday left fielder.
  • Either Sandy Alomar Jr. or David Newhan will be sent down to accommodate Milledge's arrival (likely Alomar).
  • Oliver Perez will probably start Sunday in the series finale against the Reds.
  • Dave Williams (not Mike Pelfrey) will probably be sent to New Orleans to make room for Perez.
  • Pelfrey has only earned a temporary stay of execution, as Jorge Sosa is expected to make just a single rehab start within the next week before rejoining the team.
Good news for the starting rotation, as Perez and Sosa both sound like they will be back in the fold within the next week or two.

Good about Perez and Sosa
We badly need the solid rotation we had before they went down, just in case the bats never do truly wake up.

I'm still dreaming about Milledge and Gotay in everyday roles, but that's likely to continue to be a dream for a while.

Driving the Oliver Perez bandwagon!

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
