Open Thread - Game 94: Mets vs. Padres (07/18/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Maine Maddux
ERA 2.91 4.35
FIP 3.90 3.78
K/9 7.56 4.75
BB/9 3.38 1.50
K/BB 2.23 3.16
HR/9 0.87 0.71
WHIP 1.17 1.31
GB/FB 0.82 1.65
BABIP .261 .317
eBABIP .290 .316

Que se dillio:

A win tonight against Mad Dog would give the Mets two consecutive series wins for the first time in I don't care to remember. Maddux has struck out just over one batter for every two innings pitched, yet he still has a K/BB ratio greater than three because, even as he has aged, he has never lost that impeccable command. He has walked just one-and-a-half batters every nine innings this season and just 1.83 every nine innings over the course of his career. He gives up plenty of base hits, but he doesn't allow many homeruns and he's not going to hurt himself with the bases-on-balls.

The other side of the tracks:

It would be nice
to beat Maddux. I always hated him and his 9 foot wide strike zone.

good
i hope they play him a lot with his 588 OPS at a power position. Would help us a ton.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

What a start
Greg Maddux makes me sick.

If there's a light
Maddux's WHIP this year is the worst since his first two seasons, 1990, and 1999.  If we can hit Peavy, we should be able to hit this year's Maddux.

Then again, we should have been able to hit this year's David Wells.

by thriller216 on Jul 18, 2007 10:32 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah
Maddux is hittable at this point of career.

That seems to be a recurring problem
We "break out" with 6-10 runs, then get 0-3 runs the next game.

Maddux is really dealing
could be a long night. When the year started it looked like Reyes could have an MVP season. Now, it's a very good season but maybe not as good as last year. A bit disappointing.

Reyes
Reyes is still have a great season. The only difference is his power numbers are down. He's on base more than ever.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on Jul 18, 2007 10:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes his OBP is up but his OPS is about the same
but I wouldn't call this a great season.
Save America. Impeach Bush

by elifriedman on Jul 18, 2007 10:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

his OPS+ is 125
he's leading off, so thats one place you can not hit for power. Also nothing precludes him from getting hot and hitting some HR in bunches either.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on Jul 18, 2007 10:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

OPS+
basically establishes a baseline average OPS for the league and measures players based on their percentage above/below OPS. basically player OPS/league OPS. An average player will have a 100 OPS.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

OPS+
Also, OPS+ is adjusted for parks and other factors, so a guy with Reyes' stats in a place like COL won't have as high of an OPS+ as Reyes.  So it's nice to use to compare players of the same year/era.

Maddux
lets seem him go around the order again
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

by DoctorK16 on Jul 18, 2007 10:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It does seem
that he's streakier than last year, but look what his average was at the end of last year: .300. Doc's right, he's still on pace to score 113 runs, and his OBP is 32 points higher than last year's. His power numbers are simply down, which can be said for a ton of MLB players. (But I hate stats.)

Reyes is only Met
who is having as good a year this year as last. All other except maybe Wright are having considerably worse years as Delgado Ks. Hand it to Maddux though he's unhittable. Maybe I can catch up on some sleep tonite and join Mets bats.

by elifriedman on Jul 18, 2007 11:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Wright
I would say if he can get 30/30, we should all be extremely surprised. He's still even on pace for a career high in homers.

do you really doubt Reyes' ability to hit in clutch situtations?

by DoctorK16 on Jul 18, 2007 11:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was referring to the team as a whole
but Reyes was more clutch last year. He was at beginning of season but he has fallen off as evidenced by his 222 average with 2 outs and RISP, but it doesn't matter tonite because Maine can't hold them close

probably because
the second place hitter is not doing as well as PLD did last year. Also, players can have better clutch hitting years just like they can have better power years.

We have GOT to take advantage
of these Braves defeats. We simply can't afford to keep letting them hang around until September, when anything can happen...This pennant race is like watching one of those hyped-up boxing matches between two 45-year-olds who should have retired ages ago. Close, and evenly matched, but painful to watch.

it looks like the NL East
