Open Thread - Game 95: Mets vs. Dodgers (07/19/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Glavine Lowe
ERA 4.15 3.05
FIP 4.88 3.43
K/9 4.22 6.63
BB/9 2.91 2.71
K/BB 1.45 2.45
HR/9 1.09 0.54
WHIP 1.30 1.23
BABIP .267 .293
eBABIP 0.333 0.286

Que se dillio:

Tough four game series here against the first place Dodgers. I'd say a 2-2 split would be optimistic. The Mets have to hope to win the games against Hendrickson and Tomko because Penny and Lowe have been very good this year.

what will come first
Tom Glavine's 300th win or Barry Bonds' 756th homer. I would say Barry's will come first. It may come in the Cub series especially if the wind is blowing out at Wrigley

Bonds plays his next three at Milwaukee a good hitter's park. It would be ironic if he breaks it in Bud Selig's backyard

Probably 756
For all we know Barry could break the record tomorrow, but the earliest Tommy will be able to do it is Tuesday. Besides, Bonds is "well-rested" now.

Here's a frightening statistic:
The Mets are 9-38 in games where they allow 4 or more runs this season.

Anderson single he was stealing. He didn't see that Anderson had hit the ball so he slide into 2nd and couldn't go to third. The on Wrights double he was stealing third and did the same thing, and this time he kind of got up and walked back toward second so he had to touch 3rd again and barely scored in front of Anderson.

I know the Dodgers had been struggling
offensively for a long time, but their lineup sure has some formidable bats. Kent, Nomar, Pierre, Furcal, Martin, Gonzo...

Dodger bat
Well Pierre is hardly a formidable bat, he's probably the worse regular in all of baseball. Furcal hasn't performed as well he has in Atlanta. Nomar has an OPS this year 651.

Can't remember where I read it
but apparently the Dodgers have been hitting way above average since Bill Mueller took over for Eddie Murray as hitting coach.  My guess is that they are ready for a regression to the mean.  Good, but not great, lineup.  Sorta like the Mets.

It's so weird
to think that Bill Mueller is the Dodgers' hitting coach. He's 36, but since he just retired it's unusual to see him on a ML staff so quickly.

by TheFlushingKings on Jul 19, 2007 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

In which respect?
The Dodgers have scored more runs than the Mets to this point in the season and have allowed only 5 more runs.  Their lineup is only slightly better, and recently, at least according to what I read today, and I'm sorry I can't recall the source for you, were doing much better than they had been early in the season.  My point is that their recent performance is probably not indicative of how good they really are, but they've probably been playing better than usual of late.  Hence the regression to the mean.  That's all.  Please know I've read your recent posts and this is not meant to pick a fight, but to explain what I meant.  Peace and Go Mets!

Tommy has been so inconsistent this year.
I read an article where he supposedly said it's been tough for him without Pedro, i.e. he likes Pedro to take the spotlight off him, he likes the energy and optimism Pedro brings to the team, and so on. Glavine said something along the lines that sometimes when he performs poorly, it's psychological. But tonight, I'm with Doc -- it looked like he just simply had nothing.

Good question
I keep hearing people say he's a shoo-in, but I strongly disagree with that. If Jim Rice and Keith Hernandez have been kept out all these years, I don't see why he should be let in. Sure, he might be the "greatest offensive 2B of all time", but look at everything Keith did for his position. Right now it's a toss-up, IMO.

Keith was wasn't quite
a good enough offensive player at that position to get in. Rice is a borderline case, but he was a bit one dimentional and played in hitters haven. They're only one other 2b who has ever hit like Kent, Rogers Hornsby. If Sandburg is in Kent is getting into(along with Alomar and Biggio).

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
