Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Open Thread - Game 106: Mets vs. Brewers (07/31/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Glavine Suppan
ERA 4.51 5.08
FIP 5.14 4.56
K/9 4.10 4.74
BB/9 3.01 3.25
K/BB 1.36 1.46
HR/9 1.23 0.81
WHIP 1.39 1.56
GB/FB 1.11 1.29
BABIP .280 .325
eBABIP .340 .328

Que se dillio:

Carlos Beltran hit the disabled list today, Eric Gagne went to Boston, former Met Royce Ring went to Atlanta, the Mets were close on Chad Cordero but ultimately nothing happened there.

Oh, and Tom Glavine takes his first crack at career victory #300, against our old arch enemy.

Batting second tonight.

Good deal
Everything looks nice except for Milledge batting 8th. (And Green 6th)

I wouldn't hesitate to hit him 3rd in front of Wright.

But, we all know Willie "I like Veterans" Randolph wouldn't do that. ;)

Hmm, with all of the trade stuff, nothing here
about Pedro making his first rehab start tomorrow in Port St. Lucie? I know we still might not see him this season, but I remain optimistic. There's a pretty good article today in the NYT. The main interesting stuff had to do with his mechanics, curveball, and more info on what he was doing during his extended break in the DR, i.e. getting advice from his brother, studying video, and so on. In other words, Pedro doing lots of homework. There are good Pedro-like quotes, too. I always enjoy hearing him talk.

Pedro
I'm really excited. SNY is supposed to show his stint with St. Lucie tomorrow, which will be awesome on many levels.

Ron and Gary talking about last year's

Actually, of course, with Valentin's broken leg
he probably wouldn't have been back this year anyway. I'm not missing him.

How many pitchers does it take to get 3 outs?
If your Willie Randolph ... it takes at least three.  One to set up a run.  One to give up a run.  And one to explain to Tom Glavine why he wasted an effort.  What the heck is he doing?  If it was so important to win this for Tom, why does he not put in Wagner, who has said he would much rather come in, in the 8th inning then come in the 9th with no chance at a save. It was so important that with runners on 1st and 2nd in the 7th, they let Tom hit (with more then 90 pitches in at the time). Unbelievable!

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
