Great play by Delgado
He's snagged a bunch of those line drives lately. But now we need to get some hits and runs!

...Or a 3-minute inning
I forgot that the bottom of the inning was up. But still, that was too quick...

Of course, the five errors in a game where you only score one run doesn't help.

Willie
should have sat Reyes tonite. He looks mentally and physically exhausted.

You're right
He does need to fake an injury and relax this week. It's really not that important, as I'm sure the National League is going to lose again anyway.

It's so important for Reyes
to get on base, with the #2 hitter changing every game and Beltran now struggling. He's really the most important part of the offense.

Amen
and his number now are not as good as last year's except for OBP. Homers and RBIs are below last  year's pace and BA is approaching 300

That was nice
that Wright tied it up but look at the pitiful hitting that happened after. This team can't string hits together. It's either home run or bust. I hate to sound like broken record, but Shawn Green is atrocious. I would love to see him off this team. PLEASE

when the Mets
have so many swinging strikeouts against a pitcher who has the least swings and misses against him, it is clearly time to panic. Listening Omar, this team STINKS and has for half of this season. This is unacceptable for a team with this kind of payroll and expectations.

freakin' finally.
Even if the Mets win this game against the Astro pen, the fact that Woody Williams stayed in this long is a damning indictment of the state of the lineup.

one of the lowest average with
RISP and two outs in baseball and he just had a terrible at bat, not to mention the last AB of last season. Beltran stinks. I suppose the many Beltran supporters out there will say that there is no such thing as clutch hitting and that is all dumb luck.

Beltran is still having a pretty crappy year, for Beltran.

by anonymous on Jul 7, 2007 9:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's having a crappy
year for any third place hitter. I bet he ranks at or near the bottom of the list for that position in batting order. He stinks. You seem like a nice, intelligent guy, but if you really believe that you know nothing about sports.

see:
chart

Beltran ranks 10th in OPS out of 15 qualifiers in MLB as a #3 hitter (or 21st out of 39 with at least 100 AB).  Not great by any means, but not abysmal.

It's a good thing
that I have had stuff on my mind recently other than baseball because if I didn't, the team's recent performance would have caused me to have a breakdown by now.

by Shomov on Jul 7, 2007 9:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good job, Carlos
For everyone's accusations of A-Rod being Mr. April, Beltran's starting to look a little like him. Unfathomably high salary, good numbers but can't come through in the clutch. (Before that AB he was hitting .129 with 2 out/RISP, which is 4th-worst in the entire league.) This lineup is too much for me. As soon as someone picks it up, another hitter goes spiraling into a black hole.

the meaning of "luck"
It occurs to me that some of the frustration with the stat-head attribution of things like clutch hitting to "luck" is that "luck" isn't really what we mean.  What we're talking about here is refusing to call anything an ability if it's not predictive of future performance, but instead falls within the normal (random) distribution of events around the mean.  All kinds of things could fall into that category, including the normal changes in mindset and approach that every big-league hitter makes all the time, consciously or unconsciously, as he plays.

A-Rod
I heard watching the Yankee game today that A-Rod has the best numbers in baseball this year in ninth inning "clutch" situations.  Except in extreme circumstanes, the performance of great players in "clutch" situations will even out to what you would expect.  It reminds me of how fans also disparaged Bonds for years for not being clutch until the 2002 playoffs.

And I think you're right that the whole team needs a little bit of a mindset adjustment.  Maybe a few days off to reflect on how bad they've sucked since May will help to rebuild their confidence.

I see that optimism is prevailing
We've got the meat of the order coming up, two-thirds of which has gone deep tonight. Mota committed a deadly sin by walking Ausmus to lead off, but he got himself out of it with some nice pitching. Let's see what happens.

props to Roidman
Credit to Mota for a (rare, recently) pretty good outing.  I about shat myself on Lee's fly ball, but Mota kept him in the (very large) yard, and it wasn't even really a mistake pitch.  A solid two innings.

Is that Aaron Sele out there
or Denton True Young? Why the hell hasn't Willie been running this guy out more?!

I guess it would be fitting if we won this game in 17 innings on 7/7/07. Then again, Houston is an hour behind us, but it'll be 7/8/07 soon. Wow, I'm tired and bored.

Speaking of not getting the leadoff man on
that's a great idea, Willie! Why even bother trying? Just have our reliever hit for himself and give the opponent an out! Even though that wasn't a bad AB.

I didn't mean to sound ignorant there
I knew that there was almost no one to pinch-hit for Sele. But Sele had already pitched two frames, and I thought why not at least have Wagner warming up in the bullpen. It was stupid, I know. Well, looks like he's gonna come in anyway.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
