Open Thread - Game 133: Mets vs. Phillies (08/30/2007) on SNY

Que se dillio:

If you believe in the power of momentum in this sport then the Mets find themselves in quite a pickle. They have lost four straight games overall including the first three in this series and they go at it again with the Phillies today at 1pm. In a way I think it's good for them to get back out there this afternoon to give it another go instead of having to stew over last night's loss for a full 24 (or 21 ) hours. El Duque looks to straighten things out for this wayward ship, but no pitcher is an island: if the Mets can't figure out how to score some runs then the ship's status will rapidly shift from staggering to flag out hull breach.

We need to win
I don't care how we do it. It can even be on a bullshit call at the end of the game from an umpire cough, cough.

Wonderful start
Bravo. (Reyes would be standing on third, BTW.)

looks like a sweep is in the cards here.
The Mets' luck -- or their grit and resolve, if you prefer -- is absolutely terrible right now.  This team needs to turn things around in a hurry, just for the sake of its own psychology.

by anonymous on Aug 30, 2007 1:42 PM EDT   0 recs

where the fuck is delgado going
This is the most frustrating first place team ever.

Oh good
Now DeFelice gets to lead off the 3rd.  Wouldn't want to clear the 8th place hitter or anything.

This series is a nightmare
Why can't you just stay near the bag?!...All this discussion about last night's play has led me to believe that baseball rules are extraordinarily vague and need to be more concise so that the umpires aren't a factor on every play like that.
"I'm Tim Teufel, let me begin by saying I was once a Twin/I made the move and it feels just right/I've been Metsmerized and I see the light."

by DoctorK16 on Aug 30, 2007 1:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
But it seems like too many things in baseball are judgment calls: interference, obstruction, whether the pitcher was intentionally throwing at the hitter/warnings, whether the hitter was really trying to get out of the way of a pitch, etc. etc. There needs to be a more efficient way of calling those things.

pinch-hit in the 4th
This desperation managing is going to end up being what costs the Mets the game today.  Memo to Willie: you shouldn't pinch-hit after three innings when you have no way of assembling 6 innings of decent relief pitching.

by anonymous on Aug 30, 2007 2:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Normally I agree
but he's raising the ante and forced Charlie to make a move with his crappy pen.

Yeah
And it's not like Duque was pitching well.  Plus, the Mets haven't had a real really in about a week.  If he lets Duque hit and that rally ends, most fans would be killing him.  He has to do what he can to get as many runs as possible here.

Sele, Heilman, then Wagner
3 IP, 2 IP, 1 IP.
What have we got to lose?

What have we got to lose?
I don't know, the game?  Obviously, I'd be a fool to make a big deal of this particular tactical blunder, when this slumping, stumbling Mets team finds a new way to get beat every day.  But Sele-Heilman-Wagner's failure to pitch 6 innings of shutout ball is not exactly unforeseeable here.

by anonymous on Aug 30, 2007 3:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wright
Davey has been solid through this slump.

He will have to lead them back to sanity. Or at least playing decent baseball.

by DoctorK16 on Aug 30, 2007 3:27 PM EDT   0 recs

no point
Besides (justly deserved) revenge and punishment, there's no point to this move -- rosters are about to expand.  What would help, and I think it's really the only thing, is for someone with a clue about bullpen usage and pinch-hitting tactics to make up a crib sheet for Willie, and force him to stick to it and ignore his "instincts."  I like Willie a lot, but he's terrible at this.

by anonymous on Aug 30, 2007 3:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sele is the long man
when your starter gives you 4 you use the long man no?
Keep Lastings Milledge Free

by DoctorK16 on Aug 30, 2007 3:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

sure
Sele was the right guy to pitch after making the decision to pull Hernandez.  Duque had 67 pitches after 3 innings and has a long track record of settling down in the middle innings after a shaky start.

by anonymous on Aug 30, 2007 3:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

you needed to score runs there
you're down 5-0. LMillz did the job there. I can't kill that move.

This game
Even following on Yahoo this game is driving me nuts.

by Josh on Aug 30, 2007 4:51 PM EDT   0 recs

Following on CBS Sportsline at work
Does anyone know why Feliciano pitched THREE innings?  If he could throw 44 pitches effectively he'd be a starter - the 8th should've been Heilman's.

by ams258 on Aug 30, 2007 4:54 PM EDT   0 recs

sportsline is all effed up
wagner pitched the 8th and 9th. i dont know whats going on with it tho.  im seeing the same nonsense.

by kendynamo on Aug 30, 2007 5:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That makes more sense
Although I still don't get why Heilman didn't pitch in the 8th.

by ams258 on Aug 30, 2007 5:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Feliciano
Unless I'm reading this wrong, Feliciano pitched two innings, not three.  Why?  I would suggest it would be because one of the few guys in the bullpen who doesn't suck ass.

by Josh on Aug 30, 2007 5:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I can't believe this shit
I just got home and couldn't believe the score.

Honestly, I'm glad we didn't get to extra innings here.  Willie made a decision I can live with, for once, that this was Wagner's game to lose.

yeah
It will make the next month more interesting.

We'll get to see if this team has any fire in their bellies.

by citimetro on Aug 30, 2007 5:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No Bold Predictions Here...
But this team will be out of first place by the end of the weekend. All the hype about this series with Philly was typical Mets bullshit.
"We need to show everyone who the best team in the division is." What a crock. You went to Philly, sleepwalked through the series and got your asses kicked. Plain and simple. No fire, no passion, no nothing. I am so sick of this fucking team.

Atlanta
I'd love a nice sweep this weekend. Just doesn't seem like this team is ready to play in a place where we've always had problems.

by blindbernard on Aug 30, 2007 5:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And another Thing
Is anyone else sick of seeing Delgado, Wright, Reyes, etc., smiling and giggling with the Philly catcher or baserunners when they come to the plate or in the field. I'm not saying you have to have a funeral face at all times, but it's a little sickening to see all this fucking jocularity when you are being torched by a so-called rival.
"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son." -Dean Vernon Wormer

by blindbernard on Aug 30, 2007 5:26 PM EDT   0 recs

That doesn't bother me
Everyone doesn't have to be serious and stoic to play at their best.  In fact, some players play better when they're loose.  Reyes and Wright are excellent players and - this year aside - Delgado is too.  If they feel that joking around with the opposing team doesn't hurt their play, then I'm fine with it.

by ams258 on Aug 30, 2007 5:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Venting
I'm just venting. Probably wouldn't bother me if we had taken 3 out 4. I guess it just seems like there's no sense of urgency with this team. Pardon the horrible cliche.
