Tale of the tape:

ERA 5.92 4.22

BABIP .325 .286
eBABIP .362 .314

Que se dillio:

Pelfrey hasn't been pitching particularly well in New Orleans and he certainly hasn't pitched well this season when given the opportunity to start with the big club. I guess we'll see.

low strikes
the ump is giving pelfrey the low strike ... he should stay down there.

Signs of life!
Yeah Pelfrey is looking good so far. It's good to hear a set of broadcasters other then the sny group being competent n nice to the mets!

Nice Pitching
By pelfrey so far!

by NewMet5 on Sep 1, 2007 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

wow
pelfrey does look good so far ... and whoever the fox color guy is totally called that pitch... saying eventually he has to be confident throwing the slurve at 3-2.  the he did (even tho it was a ball) and mcann strikes out.

francouer
what an idiot ... does he really think that pelfrey hit him with no out and a 3-0 lead???

by metsexile on Sep 1, 2007 5:00 PM EDT reply actions

That was a nice gift
I would have made him throw a striike in that situation; that pitch was borderline.

by Shomov on Sep 1, 2007 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

pelfrey's walks
he's nibbling ... looks so much less confident.  maybe hitting francouer rattled him.

by metsexile on Sep 1, 2007 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

let's hope that's all it is
I'm watching the game on MLB Gameday. From what I can tell, he's thrown the fastball a LOT less this past inning than he did in previous ones, and when it's coming in Gameday says 92, 93 mph when before it said 94, 95, 96 mph. He also isn't locating it in the strike zone at all. Luckily the slider seems to be on, and the Braves seem a little less patient than normal, swinging at a bunch of pitches out of the zone.

Can anyone tell me what the crazy, big looping 45 mph pitch he's thrown three times now? Is that a knuckle curve? Going by gameday, that's the only guess I have.

by jalsonmi on Sep 1, 2007 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

45 mph
that may be a mlb gameday quirk ... he's throwing a big curve but it certainly wasn't 45mph.  he also is throwing what looks like a straight change ... i think he's mixing speeds a little rather than losing velocity.

Pelfrey
He's had great stuff.  It's a shame he handed them that run.

Who is this man
and what has he done with Mike Pelfrey?

great comeback inning for pelfrey.
but i hink reyes needs to re-focus ... he seems like he's gotten very cocky and casual on the basepaths.  picked off twice in one game v. phils and again today.  as pointed out by others ... as he goes so go the mets.  need more consistency.

by metsexile on Sep 1, 2007 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Send him out for 7th?
He's thrown 99 pitches already. Do you let him pitch until he shows wear or try to protect him long term and, in a synergistic bit of showmanship, have Philip Humber come in and relieve him?

I guess I'd let him start the inning (it's not like he's super young--24 isn't the same as a 21 year old pitcher in terms of ned to protect, after all) but have Humber up and ready to come in as soon as necessary.

by jalsonmi on Sep 1, 2007 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

id send him out.
they haven't had one hard hit ball against him.  btw, i think joe girardi is pretty good.  i hadn't heard him before.  what idiots fla was to fire him.

by metsexile on Sep 1, 2007 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

WHAT?!?
Pelfrey is relieved by Mota?

What the hell is wrong with Willie Randolph?

by jalsonmi on Sep 1, 2007 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know
... but he is KILLING me.  that single is the FIRST sharply hit ball by the braves.  on mota's first batter.

by metsexile on Sep 1, 2007 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know what it is
with these pickoffs, but it has GOT to stop. They're getting picked off like it's going out of style.

Now Feliciano...
Now, Feliciano is actually a good pitcher, but with the amount everyone has been overused of late, you think Willie would show something approaching imagination and use one of the new faces he was just given. Humber has been talked up in the organization, and even wowed Willie last season and in spring training. USE HIM.

Sigh...

by jalsonmi on Sep 1, 2007 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

Good job, now score a few more runs
I don't want Willie to get any ideas and continue to overuse the guy who has said right now he has a dead arm. Score three more runs and, I think, Willie will be smart enough to send some putz out there, a la yesterday with Show.

Great pitching, good hitting
Now they have to cut down on the bad base running.  They could have scored more than 5 today.

Its always nice to win in Atlanta.

by Shomov on Sep 1, 2007 6:27 PM EDT reply actions

huge fucking win
Just enormous.

That is all.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
