Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Mets 3, Braves 2

Hero of the day: Oliver Perez - 7ip, 5h, 2r, 2er, 7k, 2bb

Ollie and John Maine have to realize that one of them will draw the short straw come playoff time and Ollie definitely came out tonight with something to prove. He was around the strike zone all night, firing 79 of his 116 pitches -- 68% -- for strikes. Aaron Heilman and Billy Wagner pitched a perfect inning apiece and the Mets walk away with a tidy 3-2 win.

Tim Hudson was on his game tonight and the Mets were probably lucky to scrape together three runs. It doesn't hurt when you have the hottest hitter in baseball swinging for your club, as David Wright blasted a two-run homerun (and later added a walk) after an off-day on Sunday. Jose Reyes reached base twice and Moises Alou added his first triple of the season.

The Phillies managed to squeak out a win against the Rockies in extra innings, but the Met win drops their magic number to 14.

Reyes
He took a walk and got on base twice.  Baby steps, maybe, but that walk was HUGE as it came in front of Wright's bomb.

Let's see Jose get on base 3 times tomorrow with a walk, single, and triple.

Jose
One thing you can say, he hasn't carried the baggage of his atrocious hitting out into the field with him. Dude is shmoove with the glove.

Did anyone else notice
That Willie Collazo's name was mis-spelled on his jersey the other night, as "Colazzo" (making him sound rather Italian, in my opinion)?

I saw that
I noted it in the Friday game thread, and I also had the same thought about "Colazzo" being Italian and "Collazo" being Spanish.

jose
why doesn't willie rest him?  he gives so many of his regulars time off ... like DWright on
Sunday who doesn't look at all tired!  perhaps jose is just tired from all of the steals??

he had two days off last week
Wednesday versus Cincinnati and Thursday was an off day.

I agree that it would be good for him to get some more time off, but he showed some signs of life last night, so maybe now is not the time.

To be honest, I'd much rather see him slump in August and then get hot ahead of the playoffs.  As Eric pointed out here recently, as Jose goes, so go the Mets.  When he gets on base, they win.  It would be great if he starts getting on base again as the Mets get into Serious October Baseball.

one more thought
Dear NL pitchers:

Unless you're looking to see if he can hit the Citi Field construction site on a fly, do NOT throw a fastball down and in to David Wright.

Sincerely,

Mets fans

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
