Que se dillio:

Not much to say about last night's loss. The Mets had opportunities to bring runs home but didn't, and the Phillies capitalized on a couple of bad defensive plays in the top of the tenth to win their sixth straight game against the Mets.

funny how Phillies seem
to pitch well only against us. A win today will relieve pressure and pretty much clinch division.Love to see Reyes break out before playoffs. He's been dissapointing the last couple of months especially with RISP.

Reyes
His prodigious stealing this year IMO has be come a mixed blessing. I think that has taken a lot out of him and Willie doesn't ever rest him. That needs to change next year.

Introduces a fast ball to someone ribs. Flash had no intention of pitching to DW in that spot and plunked him on purpose IMO. They threw at our hitters last series with impunity too. It needs to stop.

The Phillies are the new Braves.  No matter what they do, it turns to gold, while the Mets can do absolutely nothing right.  Nice little league baserunning there.

I can't kill that with 1 out. Usually Pat the Bat is a good bet to not catch anything. I thought it was a sure hit. Castillo scores if it does. Good fucking luck for them.

Pedro is DEALING
This is the best lineup in the NL, and he's got them flailing away.

Yeah, my id would have loved to Pedro stick one in Rowand's ear, but the strikeout is better.

yep
I wasn't ready to get on the Pedro bandwagon after the two last starts, where he was facing weak lineups and seemed to have some unusually difficult moments.  Today is a return to form.  He gets a bad break or two to prolong an inning, and he just sits back and notches another K.

Though I have to say I'm disappointed Lohse didn't retaliate by hitting, say, Reyes and then getting tossed.

by jalsonmi on Sep 15, 2007 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Goddamn
Even when Reyes does right, he does wrong. Granted, how could he know they'd pitch out, but still.

Can't they just give him, say, all of the next Nationals series off?

by jalsonmi on Sep 15, 2007 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

I wonder if it'd help.
Granted that he needs to change his approach, get a little more patient at the plate and pick his spots like he was doing earlier in the year: Is Reyes really the kind of guy that is helped by time off?  I feel like he's got so much energy that sitting on the bench might just drive him nuts, whereas maybe counseling him on a different approach and letting him put it in practice immediately would help.

by anonymous on Sep 15, 2007 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly
But doesn't he just seem tired as hell?

by jalsonmi on Sep 15, 2007 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

he needs time off IMO
just to give his body a break from the pounding he takes from the way he plays. The slides on the steals, the stopping and starting, the diving plays at SS. He plays baseball like a basketball player.

by DoctorK16 on Sep 15, 2007 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, but that's the thing
It seems like so much of his problem is psychological, not physical.  Will sitting on the bench make him a more patient hitter when he returns?  I'm just not sure what would work best to try to get Reyes on the right track.

by anonymous on Sep 15, 2007 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the days off earlier
in the year will help him the mental grind. Now its too late to have an effect. A game here and there just to get keep him physically sharp and not thinking about the game.

Keep Lastings Milledge Free

by DoctorK16 on Sep 15, 2007 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

What a weird way to pitch to Castillo
Do you think Coste is calling for all these pitchouts because he's personally sore at the way the Mets are running on him? When you call for a pitchout that'll become ball three, it loses it's use, since you're this close to putting that guy on second anyway by putting the current batter on first. Which is of coruse what happened (though we did get a steal in there anyway--on a pitchout no less)

by jalsonmi on Sep 15, 2007 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

But then of course Reyes goes and gets caught
He and the Mets stealing habits can be very frustrating when they do too much of it. Good baserunning has given them very little this game (Beltran probably would have scored irregardless of his two SB), poor baserunning has cost us four outs (if you count Castillo getting doubled off)

by jalsonmi on Sep 15, 2007 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

That was out of the Vince Coleman school
of baserunning. Willie needs to get in his ass.

Phils this year = most years' Braves
The Mets just CANNOT figure out how to beat this team.  It's the old Turner Field "house of horrors" effect in a different place this year.  Fortunately, they beat up on every other team so much that it hardly matters.

I recently talked about
how I admired Mets character after the last Philly sweep. I might have to take that back. It's predictable-they will get swept here and then will win division anyway. However, the 2007 Mets are a team that falls to the occasion more than arising to it

by elifriedman on Sep 15, 2007 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
Reyes' last bone-head attempt didn't make any sense at all. It was just selfish.

The commenters made some remark about him getting frustrated and trying to help his team. They were just covering for him.

There's virtually no scenario where 1_3 with two outs is better than 12_ with two outs. When the guy on 2nd is one of the fastest in baseball it is even dumber. It's nonsense, espec. with your clutchest hitter up.

I think he should have a press conference, come clean, apologize and be done with it.

by citimetro on Sep 15, 2007 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm afraid to say
that Reyes has become a selfish player. His failure to run out the grounder in Houston and other assorted pop-ups and his crazy baserunning exemplify this. I wonder if Ricky H., one of the most selfish players of all time,  has something to do with it. Actually, I don't mind selfish as long as you produce and lately jose hasn't been doing that

Mets are playing afraid
The Phillies are so far inside the Mets heads right now that it's making the Mets press, and we end up with horrible baseball all around (not the least of which was running out of an inning in the 6th).  The Mets are afraid of the Phillies, it's that simple.

Well, there was one guy who wasn't afraid of the Phillies today, because he ain't afraid of anything: Pedro Martinez.

Every time Mota pitches, a kitten dies. Please think of the kittens!

by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 15, 2007 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

I hate the Phillies.
But mostly I hate the way we blew this game. We beat ourselves. Utley's bloop in the first that should have been caught, IMO. Jose trying to steal 3B in the 6th. (Why, with 2 outs?) And I agree with other people here who have been saying that Jose is wearing himself out doing so much stealing. Beltran misplaying that ball hit by Rollins. Our offense not scoring when we had the bases loaded with no outs. And not scoring, and not scoring when there were other opportunities. And of course, there's the bullpen that should be able to hold onto a 3-1 lead.

But at least Pedro was awesome and hopefully will become even more so with each start and good and strong for the playoffs. Which will not include the Phillies if I have anything to say about it.

Win tomorrow. That's an order. And I agree with Greenpoint Ian -- Mets need to take their cue from   fierce, fearless Pedro. He doesn't let the Phillies intimidate him or get into his psyche.

And Beltran, I think you're mostly an A+ defensive guy, but sheesh, you've been playing at Shea now since 2005 -- I should think you would have mastered the wind patterns.

Anyway, go Mets!

by Max in NJ on Sep 15, 2007 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Wind patterns
To be fair, it was REALLY windy at Shea on Saturday.

But for how much money Beltran makes, he still has to catch that ball.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
