Open Thread - Game 152: Mets vs. Marlins (09/20/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Glavine Willis
ERA 3.88 5.34
FIP 4.63 5.16
K/9 3.88 6.25
BB/9 2.84 3.72
K/BB 1.37 1.68
HR/9 0.90 1.34
WHIP 1.34 1.64
GB/FB 1.14 1.48
BABIP .278 .336
eBABIP .333 .334

Que se dillio:

The Marlins held Dontrelle out of last night's game just so he could pitch against the Mets tonight. That's terrific. I was sick again today but dragged my beleaguered ass into work today because Matsumura Fishworks simply couldn't function without me for a day. To many involved it appeared that I had made a miraculous recovery on the heels of the Mets finally winning a game for the first time since forever.

let me be the first to say:
stop playing Jeff Conine already!  He's like the Guillermo Mota of position players.

hello world
The Ave. seems to be in hibernation tonight.  Good save there by Glavine, and the Mets are handling Willis as convincingly as I think they ever have.

great inning.
Reyes still looks lost, but everyone else came through -- with the exception of the still smoking-hot Wright.  Four runs in, Alou still at the plate, and the game seemingly saved, you've got to feel this team still has the ability to win games with their bats.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

totally agree
I wonder if he might need to get his eyes checked or something?  He just didn't seem to be seeing pitches at all, and his selectivity is completely gone at this point.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

dammit Willie
Why the short hook with Feliciano?  I would be much more comfortable with him than Sosa for the remainder of this inning.  Matchups are not the only thing to consider.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

! ! ! asdf ! ! !
I did not get to watch or listen to this game live.  I don't know if that's a good thing or bad.

But from what I've read of the recaps and comments and all, I can say that I would have been asking this exact same question at the exact same time, anon.

Has Willie never pulled up Pedro Feliciano's splits?  Lefties are hitting .182 against him.  Righties are hitting .212.

The dude is just a specialist--not for fucking lefties or righties or whatever.  He gets motherfuckers out.  How is it that I know that and Willie does not?

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Cabrera vs. Sosa
Was that outcome in any doubt at all?

So, what a great move to go to Sosa here.

Where Is Wagner???
Jesus.  I am not a big second guesser of managers but you have been in free fall, grab the lead and don't hand it over to your closer!!  Isn't that why the guy is getting paid all that money??  Is he hurt and I don't know it????  What the hell!!!

He's obviously unavailable for some reason, perhaps back spasms.

can't go much further here
If this goes as a loss, it's a black mark on the pitching staff for sure, but also, we need to put some of it on the complete lack of situational awareness in Willie's bullpen usage.  Again.

Question - With the absolutely horrid performance of this pen why isn't Willie trying using Humber for an inning here and there?  Can he be any worse than Mota or Sosa?  The Yankees have had a lot of success with Chamberlain.  It is worth a shot.  He has to try something different b/c this isn't working.

by millsy on Sep 20, 2007 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Humber will likely get into this game
everyone else has been used
Keep Lastings Milledge Free

by DoctorK16 on Sep 20, 2007 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

No Doubt
but that is going to be out of necessity rather than trying something different during this horrible stretch.  I like Willie but he has a tendancy to stick with the so-called proven vets too long.  Mike DeJean/Manny Aybar anyone????

Maybe Willie knows something I don't but sometimes when things are going bad you just need to do something different and it is hard for me to believe Humber would have been any worse than Mota.

a bloop double and a bad error from Mr.MVP who has been awful in the field lately.

You seriously wouldn't have preferred to see Feliciano try to pitch the whole 9th inning?  Or Humber get a shot?

DW
Made a great play to catch that ball and I'm not sure that Conine couldn't have caught it.

if he had a ten foot arm. Look I love Wright but he's in a fielding slump and this game was won if he doesn't make that error.

still feel this way?
At least we don't have to suffer any longer.

This team needs a new bullpen.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Why Is Sosa
still pitching.  I get that we have used a lot of pitchers but the penant is pretty much on the line.  He doesn't have it tonight - get him out of there.

by millsy on Sep 20, 2007 10:58 PM EDT reply actions

because
Willie is a stupid fucking idiot. Why not try Humber. Sosa pitched a tough inning yesterday and one today. No way should he be pitching 2 today.
Save America. Impeach Bush

by elifriedman on Sep 20, 2007 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Willie
but I agree here.  He should have rolled Humber out to pitch the 10th.  The guy is starter and he hasn't thrown in a while so he could go 5-6 innings if needed.

by millsy on Sep 20, 2007 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I may stop blogging
this team isn't worth my damn time. I really, really don't believe in my heart that the will make the playoffs or that they deserve to.

by elifriedman on Sep 20, 2007 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah.
Ultimately I don't think they have the pitching, especially the bullpen, to succeed this year.  But I don't know if they'd be sinking like a rock like this if they were managed by someone who knew how to get the most out of a bullpen.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Willie is an idiot
moron...fool, idiot, whatever term you can come up with...does not know how to manage his way out of a cardboard box.

by Grouchoman on Sep 20, 2007 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

it's time
Willie Randolph's job needs to be on the line here.  The stupid bullpen decisions have to stop.  Sure, he doesn't have too much to work with, but he's got to stop going back to the same losers the 20th time out and expecting different results.

by anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

The Definition of Insanity
is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  He has to stop going to guys like Sosa and Mota and give Humber and possibly Pelfrey (if he isn't needed to start again) a shot out there.  This isn't working so he needs to mix it up.

I like the job Willie has been doing for the most part but he seems in brain lock right now.

by millsy on Sep 20, 2007 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

also what in the world is the matter
with Reyes. His hitting is pitiful and he looks very tentative in the field. It can't just be fatigue. This is show time. If you can't get your adrenaline flowing now you aren't much of a baseball player.
Save America. Impeach Bush

by elifriedman on Sep 20, 2007 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

this is second time in week
that Willie gave up on Feliciano after one hitter. When you're don't have Wagner and your bullpen is depleted you don't do that. Sorry Doc, but Lastings truly fucked up. He's a fucking kid. He should keep his fucking mouth shut. Now he might be suspended. I'm getting this all in because I have to stop doing this for awhile.

Didn't see it live. I saw the replay
Yes he kid, he's 22, we were fucking kids sometimes at that age. He still the best right fielder on the Mets, plus he has great examples from Anderson, Alou and PLD on how to get kicked out of games, and their Proven Vets.

Reminding Me of the '64 Phillies
I wasn't alive for the collapse of the 1964 Phillies but I have read that Gene Mauch was criticized for using his two best pitchers, Jim Bunning and Chris Short, on short rest during their losing streak which cost them the penant.  I am loath to criticize Willie because for the most part I think he has done a good job (let us not forget Art Howe) but his constantly going back to these useless guys in the pen is reminding me of Mauch's mistake.  He needs to mix it up.  As I have said above, can Humber be any worse than what he has been getting?

And what the heck is the matter with Wagner.  Of all the times for this to happen.  Uggh!!!
