Open Thread - Game 156: Mets vs. Nationals (09/24/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Pelfrey Chico
ERA 5.24 4.74
FIP 4.80 5.56
K/9 5.64 5.20
BB/9 4.57 3.99
K/BB 1.24 1.30
HR/9 0.67 1.45
WHIP 1.70 1.54
GB/FB 1.80 0.68
BABIP .338 .294
eBABIP .353 .320

Que se dillio:

Mike Pelfrey is 3-0 with a totally respectable 3.44 ERA in three September starts (plus one relief appearance). his .49 homeruns-per-nine rate is very strong, though his 4.90 walks-per-nine is deplorable. The 7.40 strikeouts-per-nine is passable if he can get his walk rate down to the 2-2.5 level.

C'mon Mets
Lets open some Queens Woop Ass
"As for 1966--oy. Chilcott was a catcher who never reached the majors. The number two pick was held by the Kansas City A's. They picked Reggie Jackson"

Pelfrey
sure looks a lot better the last few times out.  Howie Rose suggests it's down to Lo Duca insisting he throw more fastballs -- and he certainly got the first three outs here without throwing anything else.

chico
isnt that spanish for 'fatso'?

by kendynamo on Sep 24, 2007 7:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pelf
Looking good through two. A couple of strikeouts, no walks.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 7:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hitting
Unbelievable the Mets haven't scored a run yet off Chico, who seems eminently hittable to almost everyone in the lineup.  Reyes running into an out in the 1st could hardly have worse timing.

nats announcers suck
screw you mlb tv and your stupid blackouts.  besides being boring as hell they are slurping zimmerman so hard.

don sutton's gems of wisdom
"think about, a 28 game hit streak is like getting one hit a day for a month."

holy crap no way.

now the ther guy
"i'd like to go down to the dugout and slip on zimmerman's glove and see if theres anything magical about it"

im going to barf if they keep this up.

Wow
No sooner did Keith and Gary finish their verbal tongue-bathing of Alou did said outfielder commit a defensive atrocity.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 8:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

tongue-bathing
Can we have a cease-fire on the oral sex metaphors?  I'm getting all kinds of nasty mental images out of this thread (Nats announcers buying Zimmerman's used gloves out of Japanese-style vending machines, and now this?).

The Nat announcers
are probably just crochety because they won't get a chance to bitch about Milledge tonight. Look for a double dose tomorrow, though

crochety

Ugh
Pelfrey done lost the plate here in the fifth.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 8:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bah
Pelfrey found the strike zone, much to the delight of Austin Kearns's bat.

Where's the "O"? Matt Chico shutting them down? Stinky stink stink.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 8:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

they are beating the crap out of the ball
they just arent stringing them together for runs.

by kendynamo on Sep 24, 2007 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pelfrey
All in all, not a very impressive outing. Four unintentional walks in 5.2 innings.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 8:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow
Not that it was an easy play, but Alou's defense has been embarrassing on a couple of occasions tonight.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 8:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Okay
7-2. Lo Doca still swinging a hot bat.

Nice
Nice walk by Green. Then Conine mouthed "I could've done that". Classic.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 9:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Come on, Jose
Even a single makes this a three-run game.

by Eric Simon on Sep 24, 2007 9:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bah
I guess it could've been worse than an RBI single. Right now Reyes is the last guy I want up in a big situation. He's been very jumpy and undisciplined at the plate. Frustrating, to say the least.

good to see Mota
up to his old tricks, but right now the whole bullpen just sucks big time. A huge game and the team comes out flat. Lousy pitching and no timely hitting. Oh well. Bound to be decided in the last game

Who's betting against the Mets?
Mota, Willie, or both?
The butcher and the baker and the people on the street, where did they go? To meet the Mets!

no timely hitting
But, to be fair, tons of hitting.  If you believe luck is most of what's responsible for when hits come in bunches, then most nights they hit like this, the Mets would have five or more runs.

No sugarcoating the pitching, though.  That just sucked, front to back.

by anonymous on Sep 24, 2007 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
Mets offense has been excellent lately albeit against mostly lousy pitching. Pelfrey was very bad today and the bullpen is bad every day

Reyes
has been a bitter disappointment down the stretch. He's sure no Derek Jeter

Omar's off-season contract strategy. (Get it?)
(Yes, I'm having too much fun with GraphJam)
I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
