I'm trying to temper my expectations for Pedro's 2007 return this afternoon. It certainly doesn't help that the Mets are facing one of the best starters in the National League, but ultimately Pedro's performance will stand on its own. The Mets said the other day that he would be on a fairly strict pitch count of 75 for the game, though all pitches aren't created equal and a lot will have to do with the level of duress under which he makes those pitches.

I'm worried that they're treating this like a rehab assignment when the playoffs are still in question, though.

It's become so foreign to me to have a Mets pitcher just throw strikes this way. I forgot just how many reaons there were I love Pedro.

Pedro pitched the greatest game I ever saw in person: 6/7/05 against the Astros. 9IP, 2H, 1R, 1BB, 12K. No hits allowed until a Chris Burke home run in the seventh. He struck out the side in the 9th.

Willie drives me crazy. Hasn't he ever heard to resting people to make sure they don't get overworked? He does it enough with the rotation. Why does he have to slag the bullpen? No imagination. no imagination at all.

These things add up

Even one inning can hurt in the long run--meaning that, really, it isn't one inning. It's one inning, than another the next, then another the next, and being brought in to warm up in between. This is what gave Wagner his dead arm.

You know things are going pretty well for a guy (and that he's making me selfish) that I was disappointed Wright made out right there. These days I'm surprised when he does make out.

It took a while, but I think it's now safe to say he's having the best season of any third basemen not also located in New York. Eat that, Miguel Cabrera!

But a six run lead is the perfect time to pitch Mota.

Still, I just want to see Humber pitch. Is there any reason Willie can't bring him in in the ninth? I really, really hope he doesn't bring in Sosa for that one.

Reyes's OBP is still a career high .369, showing that his value to the team doesn't depend solely on his batting average anymore. Everything is going pretty well if the drop below a .300 BA now qualifies as a "problem."

...indeed. tho i do think that jose is having trouble with his consistency ... there seem to be a few too many games where he takes a 0-5, 1-5, etc. but my expectations of him are admittedly very, very high ... bc he usually delivers.

Yeah

But on a purely selfish level don't you want to see Reyes get back to where he was a month ago? He's been pretty cold of late, and has only sporadically hit for power for about two months. I don't remember the last time he hit a triple.

Still, he's having a great season, just not the monster amazing one he was having at the start of the season. For a while he was leading majors in VORP.

The offense looks pretty damned good right now, but selfishly I want Reyes to explode. I guess maybe next season.

I also want Reyes to be as great as he looked like he could be after last year if he continued to develop at the same pace. His improvement has leveled off a little bit this year, while Hanley Ramirez has turned into the clearly superior player of the two, which is annoying. I'd love to see Reyes add some power and some better pitch selection and strike-zone judgment next year. But we have to acknowledge that the 2007 version is not a disappointing player to have.

Hanley is a superior offensive player

but is a terrible defensive SS at this point. I think their metrics with defense included are about the same.

Wins Above Replacement Player

Which includes defense, has Reyes's WARP3 at 11.3 and Ramirez's at 9.5. Both are outstanding, superstar caliber seasons, but with defense Reye's is even better.

By the way, according to Baseball Prospectus's metric Reyes is having an obscenely great defensive year. Not quite Ozzie smith caliber, but close enough that when coupled with his merely "very good" offensive campaign he's hands down the best shortstop in baseball this year.

Still, with his talent, he could very easily have this great a defensive season while hitting .330/.400/.500 or so while stealing 90 bases. Which would give him, all around, one of the greatest shortstop seasons of all time.
