Open Thread - Game 137: Mets vs. Reds (09/03/2007) on SNY

Que se dillio:

I'm trying to temper my expectations for Pedro's 2007 return this afternoon. It certainly doesn't help that the Mets are facing one of the best starters in the National League, but ultimately Pedro's performance will stand on its own. The Mets said the other day that he would be on a fairly strict pitch count of 75 for the game, though all pitches aren't created equal and a lot will have to do with the level of duress under which he makes those pitches.

5 innings if he's lucky
But they do still need to have him pitch.
I'm worried that they're treating this like a rehab assignment when the playoffs are still in question, though.

Pedro
I know I should temper my expectations, but even so...

HAPPY PEDRO DAY, EVERYBODY!

I'm pumped
Taught my 3year old to say Pedro, but it comes out more like Pe-do

Haha
That's great. Bad luck for the pitch though.

yikes
I'm trying to stay calm. Those first two runs were lucky just to get on.

by citimetro on Sep 3, 2007 1:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah thanks Alou
He was throwing at the end of that inning.

3000 Ks for Petey
He looks good. That fastball is up around 88-90 his change up is still basically unhittable.

Good pace
37 pitches through three isn't bad at all, especially considering his first inning. Thank you Cincinatti Reds.

well Petey throws strikes
The Reds have some walkers in there lineup. Griffey, Hatteburg and Dunn.

Very true
It's become so foreign to me to have a Mets pitcher just throw strikes this way. I forgot just how many reaons there were I love Pedro.

Pedro pitched the greatest game I ever saw in person: 6/7/05 against the Astros. 9IP, 2H, 1R, 1BB, 12K. No hits allowed until a Chris Burke home run in the seventh. He struck out the side in the 9th.

mine too
The Pedro vs. Webb match up at Shea. He was amazing that night.

It would be nice
But I'm guessing they'll stick to their 75 (76) pitch limit.

Braves up 3-1
Feels very weird to say this, but lets go Braves.

On the Talking chop site yesterday, the braves fans were saying their team should just let philly kick them to let philly keep up with us. Gave me a good laugh

lefties coming up
but still. He walks the first one too.

Yeah but
Sometimes a pitcher's bad enough that lefty/righty just doesn't matter.

Our man Show is just such a pitcher.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
He got out of it, but was lucky as hell to do so. I'll take it, of course, but hate so much that he's ever brought in when the differential is lower than five.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate No-Show
Delgado saved his bacon right there with the glove.

by citimetro on Sep 3, 2007 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Up by at least four against the Reds
Can they finally bring in Humber next inning?

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nope
Up 5, against the Reds, we still get Feliciano.

Willie drives me crazy. Hasn't he ever heard to resting people to make sure they don't get overworked? He does it enough with the rotation. Why does he have to slag the bullpen? No imagination. no imagination at all.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ha!
Carlos Delgado gets a SB. If I were the catcher I would have just thrown to second.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

green
it's the only way he can get a run in w/ the bases loaded ... but i'm so satisfied with the way things are going right now, i won't dare complain!!!

by metsexile on Sep 3, 2007 3:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yup
but with a 5 run lead ... but as someone pointed out the other day ... wishing the "starter" millidge was in there in the first place!

by metsexile on Sep 3, 2007 3:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Willie has made him a platoon player
at this point. It's silly IMO.

These things add up
Even one inning can hurt in the long run--meaning that, really, it isn't one inning. It's one inning, than another the next, then another the next, and being brought in to warm up in between. This is what gave Wagner his dead arm.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,
Its just about safe to say we have a five game lead.

Shh
Don't jinx it.

You know things are going pretty well for a guy (and that he's making me selfish) that I was disappointed Wright made out right there. These days I'm surprised when he does make out.

It took a while, but I think it's now safe to say he's having the best season of any third basemen not also located in New York. Eat that, Miguel Cabrera!

I'd make the same argument I made last inning
But a six run lead is the perfect time to pitch Mota.

Still, I just want to see Humber pitch. Is there any reason Willie can't bring him in in the ninth? I really, really hope he doesn't bring in Sosa for that one.

carloses
... cb now over .280.  cd now over .250.  wright at .320.  only hiccup is reyes down to .295.  would be great if things finally start clicking wouldn't it???

by metsexile on Sep 3, 2007 4:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

not really a hiccup
Reyes's OBP is still a career high .369, showing that his value to the team doesn't depend solely on his batting average anymore.  Everything is going pretty well if the drop below a .300 BA now qualifies as a "problem."

by anonymous on Sep 3, 2007 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good problem to have
...indeed. tho i do think that jose is having trouble with his consistency ... there seem to be a few too many games where he takes a 0-5, 1-5, etc.  but my expectations of him are admittedly very, very high  ... bc he usually delivers.

by metsexile on Sep 3, 2007 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
But on a purely selfish level don't you want to see Reyes get back to where he was a month ago? He's been pretty cold of late, and has only sporadically hit for power for about two months. I don't remember the last time he hit a triple.

Still, he's having a great season, just not the monster amazing one he was having at the start of the season. For a while he was leading majors in VORP.

The offense looks pretty damned good right now, but selfishly I want Reyes to explode. I guess maybe next season.

by jalsonmi on Sep 3, 2007 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course
I also want Reyes to be as great as he looked like he could be after last year if he continued to develop at the same pace.  His improvement has leveled off a little bit this year, while Hanley Ramirez has turned into the clearly superior player of the two, which is annoying.  I'd love to see Reyes add some power and some better pitch selection and strike-zone judgment next year.  But we have to acknowledge that the 2007 version is not a disappointing player to have.

by anonymous on Sep 3, 2007 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hanley is a superior offensive player
but is a terrible defensive SS at this point. I think their metrics with defense included are about the same.

Wins Above Replacement Player
Which includes defense, has Reyes's WARP3 at 11.3 and Ramirez's at 9.5. Both are outstanding, superstar caliber seasons, but with defense Reye's is even better.

By the way, according to Baseball Prospectus's metric Reyes is having an obscenely great defensive year. Not quite Ozzie smith caliber, but close enough that when coupled with his merely "very good" offensive campaign he's hands down the best shortstop in baseball this year.

Still, with his talent, he could very easily have this great a defensive season while hitting .330/.400/.500 or so while stealing 90 bases. Which would give him, all around, one of the greatest shortstop seasons of all time.

Interesting way to score
No innings with more than 2 runs scored (yet--though probably won't get any more in the 9th), but 7 out of 9 innings were run scoring innings. Damned impressive.

The reds bullpen
Is really pretty sad.  Stormy's the best of the lot.  Ow.  Homer + HBP in one inning.

by ivy on Sep 3, 2007 4:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Now Sele
Again, fine time to bring him in, but will we ever see the guys they called up on roster expansion?

Excelente
That really just could not have gone better.  :-D
