Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Friday Morning Mets Newsstand

Bullet list, countdown to 5pm edition.

  • Ken Rosenthal checks in with an update on the Santana negotiations. Nothing really new or enlightening, but it sounds like progress is being made.
  • Keith Law released his Top 100 Prospects list yesterday. He's got Fernando Martinez at #10, and he chatted about the list yesterday afternoon.
  • At Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein published his list, ranking Martinez at #51. He also had a chat.
  • MILB.com also published their list, slotting Martinez at #17.
  • At The Post, Joel Sherman thinks that Johan Santana's arrival in Queens will eventually end their no-hitter drought.
  • The Yankees signed Morgan Ensberg to a minor league deal. He will compete for a spot at first base. Nice signing. I thought the Phillies would have been much better off grabbing Ensberg instead of Pedro Feliz, as Ensberg draws plenty of walks and can hit 20-30 homeruns if he's in one of his "on" years.
  • At Dan Agonistes, Dan Fox talks a bit about Brian Bannister and then continues the pile-on of Marty Noble's Luddism towards statistical analysis.

whoa
the trade isn't finalized yet and we're already thinking about no-hitters?  let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Fair enough.
"We" was the wrong word.

OK, so it's an hour and twenty minutes before the deadline.  Any word about what's going on?

Pedro
Furthering the bullet list, I just noticed at the top of the Rotoworld ticker that Pedro's agent is already making noise about how far away from wanting to retire he is.  I wonder if the Mets and Pedro could get together on a Wakefield-like renewable deal that would keep him in Queens for the rest of his career?  That's something I'd much prefer to see than Pedro wandering around the majors (Piazza-style) on a series of 1-3 year deals as his career tapers off.

Yea
I hear you. I'm not sure if Pedro is so enamored of Queens that he would forfeit a three-year deal in lieu of a string of one-year pacts with the Mets, but I would love to see him continue to pitch at a high level and ride off into the sunset as a Met. He was pivotal in the resurrection of this franchise from the morass it was drowning in earlier this decade.

The problem is if/when he outlives his usefulness but he still wants to pitch, where does that leave all involved?

also,
The Red Sox just signed Sean Casey to an absurdly cheap one-year deal.  Allow me to say: WTF, Omar?  He would've been the perfect new Julio Franco, a cheap insurance policy on Delgado and 25th man/pinch hitter.

Klaw
keith law prospect list is pretty sweet, but did anyone else notice him slame The Watchmen on his other (mostly) non-baseball blog, The Dish?

Break up the Rays
I knew Tampa had a lot of young talent, but I didn't realize they were this stocked.  Woa.  The consensus of the prospect ratings suggests that they have a consensus top 3 in 3B Longoria (soon to make us forget Eva?), 3 top 20 pitchers (Price, Wade, and McGee), and two more top 30 position players in Jennings and the SS (whose name I forget).

IF only half these guys continue to develop as projected and they hold on to most of their existing set of young big leaguers (Pena, Young, Upton, Shields, and a certain unmentionable pitcher), then in a few years Tampa might have a legit shot to end the Boston/NYY hold on the AL East.  Too bad their stadium, fan base, and uniforms suck.

yes
The Rays are ready to make a huge step forward this year.  The franchise should have its first winning season, and in 2009, I think they absolutely will contend for the AL East crown.  Remember, just as many of these youngsters will be maturing, the core of Boston and New York's lineups will be getting really old.

It's a good time to jump on the Rays bandwagon if you live in Florida.  I think they're in the same spot Oakland was in 1999 and Minnesota was in 2001 and are about to make an extended run as a contender.

Flushing, Queens: soon to be known as Johan's-burg!!!

Delmon Young
...is in Minnesota now. But they do have the young and spry Mr. Cliff Floyd.

glad its all happening in the AL East
is there a tougher division in all of pro sports?  and add to that the unbalanced schedule of MLB.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
