Mets Minor League ST Report - 3/21

7

ZEPHYRS 4, BISONS 4 Most notably, RHP Matt Harvey got the start in this one and allowed three runs over six innings. Offesnviely, the star was the French-Canadian C Jean-Luc Blaquiere who blasted a two-run shot. 1B Allan Dykstra went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's, while 3B Zach Lutz went 1-for-3. SUNS 8, B-METS 3 RHP Gonzalez Germen got the start and though he was dominant through 2+ innings -- see, 5 K's -- he left in the third with two men on. RHP Taylor Whitenton promptly allowed the next batter to homer and the rout was on. OF Darrell Ceciliani was the offensive star in this one, going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple while the hot-hitting OF Cory Vaughn knocked his second homer of the spring. METS 3, CARDINALS 3 As usual, very few details about the A-level baseball aside from the few key participants, including LHP Carlos Vazquez, RHP Marcos Camarena, RHP Jacob DeGrom, RHP Julian Hilario and last but certainly not least LHP Steven Matz. According to first-hand reports Matz "looked really good", allowing one run and striking out one in one inning. Offensively, the game saw a number of notable outfielders in Brandon Nimmo, Gilbert Gomez and Joe Tuschak.

Will Allan Dykstra halt the trend of Padres first-round picks not panning out? Yes, if the left-hander's stunning raw power prevails, along with a keen intelligence and work ethic. "He's a great kid," said Sam Blalock, who coached Dykstra at Rancho Bernardo High. "He's got Petco Park power," the Padres' Grady Fuson said after drafting Dykstra 23rd overall in June. General Manager Kevin Towers likened the first baseman's power to that of Washington Nationals slugger Adam Dunn.

We're saved! True story: I got an IM from the former Davidlizerblog saying Dykstra had been signed and I responded back: Allan Lenny Dykstra's too old to get excited about. JK!...

Padres Sign First Round Pick Allan Dykstra

1

"The Padres and first-round draft pick Allan Dykstra have agreed to terms, beating tonight's major league deadline for clubs to reach terms with any unsigned draft selections " Let's hope his hip injury is a non-issue.

KT is in San Diego. Scott's pissed about the phone line. KT doesn't know what the budget will be like next year. Giles wasn't interested in the Red Sox so they didn't even get to talk about players. KT thinks the leak came from the clubhouse. This off season, he, Sandy, and John will get together and decide who fits into the budget. Nobody said anything about a $40m payroll. We lack team speed, we need to add depth to our lineup, bullpen. Miss Brocails and Linebrinks. Seriously, there wasn't discussion about Giles going to Boston, he never wanted to go, KT could tell from the beginning. The Padres will inform Bick/Giles if they're going to re-up him at the end of this season. Dykstra deal may be a stare-down 'til the deadline. We've lost considerable time due to #1 picks suffering injury, that's why it's taking so long.

Twelve first-round picks remain unsigned as of now, but I think the only one who might not come to terms is Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra. Dykstra and the Padres had agreed on a $1.4 million bonus, but a subsequent physical has the club concerned about his right hip, which required surgery in high school. San Diego is worried that it's a degenerative condition, while Dykstra got a second opinion from Angels medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum, who cleared him. Add in the Scott Boras Corporation, which is advising Dykstra, and it may be difficult to resolve the situation to both sides' satisfaction.

Jim Callis from Baseball America doesn't see the Padres signing first round pick Allan Dykstra.

For what it’s worth, heard from multiple people the Diamondbacks were really high on Allan Dykstra, the big Wake Forest first baseman who went three picks before them to the Padres.
