Much to David Letterman’s chagrin, the Mets on this date 26 years ago dispatched backup catcher Ed Hearn to the Royals along with pitcher Rick Anderson for David Cone. Also, Timo Perez was traded to the White Sox for Matt Ginter.
Forty-year-old David Cone left the Yankees’ broadcast booth and signed on with the Mets for one more go-round on this date in 2003. The hope going into the season was that a resurgent Cone would complete an aging but still contender-worthy rotation.
The Year of the Balk comes to an end, much to the relief of the New York Mets pitching staff.
