A fan shares a story about seeing Omar Minaya and his family at a Los Angeles shopping mall, amid the Mets horrific Western trip, which culminated with losing 3 of 4 at Dodger Stadium.
No article yet, just a blurb at the top of the site: "Breaking News 3:23 AM ET: The New York Mets Fire Manager Willie Randolph" How this news managed to break in the middle of the night, I have no idea. [Update, by kingcritical] Promoted to front page. WFAN says Randolph, Peterson, and Nieto all are fired. This is just a bizarre move, especially (as Tony Page points out) since the team just won a game after flying out to the west coast. More as it develops. [Update #2] Adam Rubin got the scoop. [Update #3] Story link at the top edited to point to short NY Times story on the matter instead of NY Times front page.
Megdal compares and contrasts.
MGL weighs in on Willie Randolph's influence (or lack thereof) on the outcome of Mets games.
"Willie Randolph got a vote of confidence Friday from General Manager Omar Minaya, but that did not stop the sharks from circling. On "The Mike & Murray Show" on Sirius Satellite Radio, the former Met Gary Carter campaigned to replace Randolph. Carter, a Hall of Famer, is the manager of the Orange County Flyers of the independent Golden Baseball League." Intriguing. I'm not sure whether those in the know consider the Kid to be a potential MLB manager, but it's tough to deny that he had enthusiasm and passion in spades.
Just speculation, but PLEASE let this be true.
