Anonymous Commenting

Anyone who has visited this or any of the other SportsBlogs sites knows that you need to sign up for an account before you are able to post comments. This has its advantages and disadvantages.

On the plus side, it eliminates trolls and comment spam since all comments must be accompanied by a valid login/password. It also ensures accountability for a comment. Anything you say is directly attributable to you; it can't be hidden behind the curtain of anonymity.

The flip side of this is that it prevents the casual visitor from commenting. I know that there are many sites on which I would contribute if I just didn't have to create an account, and I'm sure there are people here like that, too.

With that in mind, I am going to open an experimental phase this offseason in which anyone -- even unregistered users -- can comment on anything posted here. This will give everyone a chance to make their voice heard. All unregistered commments appear as "Anonymous Hero", so if you want a real name to go with your opinions you should probably create an account. Accounts here are completely free of charge, and you will never be contacted except to verify your account once it has been created. Your information will never be sold or given to anyone, either.
