After the better part of two disappointing seasons in Baltimore, Lee Mazzilli will return to the Yankees this season as Joe Torre's bench coach.
"Lee was certainly qualified for this position before he had been a major league manager and he's only that much more capable now," Torre said in a statement.Joe Girardi was Torre's bench coach last year and has since taken the managerial helm of the Florida Marlins. Mazzilli should be considered a big step up from Girardi, what with Mazz actually having big league coaching experience. Girardi's qualifications included stints on "The Yankee Post Game Show" and a weekly spot on "Kids On Deck" which, according to YESNetwork.com, featured Girardi involved in "hijinks with a selected Yankee." I'm not making this up.
