This might be the most winnable game of the series, even with Pedro going on Sunday. I'm going to be honest right now: with the season in the tubes already, the Mets need to do everything possible to maintain their current level of ineptitude. This may sound like heresy, but the Mets have the 15th best record in baseball, and the bottom 15 teams (i.e. 16-30) can not lose their first round pick as compensation for a free agent signing. The Mets project to be very busy this offseason and with nothing much to play for in 2005 it would be in their best interest to make sure they wind up in the bottom half of the Majors, record-wise.
I'm not suggesting they lose on purpose, but they could stand to give some of the veterans a bit more rest and bring up some younger guys like Brian Bannister and Yusmeiro Petit to play out the stretch. Give Pedro a few days off, let Benson rest his shoulder or whatever is ailing him, and let some of the kids run around. I realize the Mets are already playing a lot of young guys, but give Mike Jacobs a few starts behind the dish now that the games don't matter anymore. Let Beltran take the rest of the season off to think about what went wrong and bring up Angel Pagan and Prentice Redman to knock it around a little bit.
