The Mets have resigned Guillermo Mota to a two-year deal worth $5 million. The deal calls for annual salaries of $2 million in 2007 and $3 million in 2008. Mota will miss the first 50 games of the 2007 season after being suspended for a positive PED test.
Omar Minaya was impressed that Mota took responsibility for his actions. He also realizes that the market for a decent setup man is thin, so the Mota deal certainly makes sense from a baseball and financial perspective. Fan reaction will likely boil down to performance (as it usually does). If Mota struggles upon his return, he probably won't be given a lot of leeway.
