Glorious Pelf-Improvement

Mike Pelfrey is:

18th in the NL in ERA
20th in the NL in groundball-to-flyball ratio

His strikeout and walk rates are still not great, but they've been a lot better over his last three starts. Before those three starts he was pitching better, but the peripheral results were a little discouraging. Now he has 16 strikeouts and just two walks in his last 22 innings pitched. He also has 38 groundball outs to just 15 flyball outs in those three starts. That's a G/F ratio of 2.53, which would put him behind only Brandon Webb and Tim Hudson among NL starters were he to have posted that ratio for the whole season to date. That's the company that Pelfrey should aspire to find himself among, and even if he isn't really there yet, at least it's no longer embarrassing to imagine that one day he might be.

Big winners: Carlos Beltran, +22.2% WPA, Mike Pelfrey (pitcher), +20.8% WPA
Big losers: Damion Easley, -2.6% WPA, Mike Pelfrey (hitter), -2.0% WPA
Teh aw3s0mest play: Carlos Beltran da woot!, +20.5% WPA
Teh sux0rest play: Meaningless Brad Hawpe single in 4th, -4.7% WPA
Total pitcher WPA: +20.9%
Total batter WPA: +29.1%
