Former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb has agreement w/ #Rangers, pending physical, source says. Agent Jonathan Maurer had no comment via text.
Webb was one of the best and most durable starters in baseball from 2003 thru 2008, but he made just one start in 2009 and missed all of 2010 with a frayed labrum. When healthy he can be a ground ball machine and a staff workhorse, though he will still have to pass a physical before his deal with the Rangers is made official.
Webb is the sort of low-risk, high-upside signing the Mets might have considered adding to an iffy rotation, but it may be that he was asking for more than Sandy Alderson was willing to pay for someone whose outlook is as murky as Webb's. I think $1 million plus significant incentives could have made sense for the Mets, but I suspect the Rangers ended up paying significantly more than that.
