GMJR. DFA'd. And then there were none.

Finally!

So to recap, this is the third player to get DFA'd that just about everyone outside of Omar and Jerry knew should be cut before the season even began.

First, Mike Jacobs gets the 1B job despite being outplayed by Chris Carter. So, he is the opening day clean up hitter, and he goes and hits like Jacobs always has, except with less power. Manages 1 HR and 2 rbis in about 8 games or so, while striking out all over the place. Though it felt like ages, it was a mercifully short stint in relation to GMJr.

Second, Franky Cats gets demoted as it appears he's lost all baseball related skills, except the one that allows him to ground out to second base. Years ago he was a solid pro, and by all appearances, a good guy. It's kind of a sad way for a local guy to go out, but this is a harsh game at times.

And finally, the unholy triumvirate is eradicated today with the demotion of Gary Matthews Jr., who was easily one of the worst players in MLB this year. To his credit, he at least seemed like an ok guy and didn't cause too much distraction. However, in 65 plate appearances this year (many in big situations), Matthews came to bat with 50 total men on base. He drove in 1. That's right, 1 out of 50. His triple slash like reads like Mapquest directions for interstate travel, and he struck out 24 times while OPSing .507.

Lets look at the combined contributions of these 3 guys:

107 ABs, 20 hits, 4 2bs, 1 HR, 4 rbis. They did at least manage 10 walks! Shame on the pitchers that allowed these guys a free base.

Adding Alex Cora's 83 at bats and .552 OPS to this total makes this a lot more depressing, so I won't go there. This is just a shocking lack of production from a bench. These guys combined have easily cost the Mets a game or 3 already, and who knows, if they are fighting for a WC spot in Sept. that looms large. I do realize that's highly unlikely, but the fact is that none of these guys should have been on the team, and we all knew it before a game was played. How do a GM and major league manager both not know it? What did they see in these guys? They didn't play well in Spring, they didn't play well over the last several years. It's an inexcusable error of roster management, and they should both be fired on these decisions alone. That is all, now lets all enjoy the Omir Santos era, pt. 2.
