Star of the Night

Dillon Gee was just outstanding. He threw eight innings of one-run, three-hit ball while striking out eight and walking one. Gee’s ERA only stands at 4.51 on the season, but the strikeout-to-walk ratio is excellent at 110:27. He’s been a little unlucky—his BABIP is .324—but his big weakness has been to home runs. He’s allowed 15 so far, which really isn’t too far out of sync with his batted ball profile. But in any event, Gee is in a groove right now; his last four outings have all been strong.

Jonathan Kountis was the 19th round draft pick for the Mets this year, and he’s also our Goat of the Night. After getting demoted from Brooklyn for general ineffectiveness as a reliever, Kountis set a bad tone in his first start for Kingsport.

System Roundup

  • It was the Dillon Gee show on Sunday in Buffalo. Gwinnett starter Jose Ortegano and two relievers held the Bisons to two runs on seven hits, but Gee was even sharper. He threw eight innings, throwing just 97 pitches despite walking one and striking out eight. It was a fantastic performance. On the offensive side of the game, Jorge Padilla had three hits, including an RBI double in the fifth to give the Bisons the 2-1 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Boxscore
  • Binghamton starter Mark Cohoon struck out seven but allowed five third-inning runs—four on a grand slam to Eric Thames—as the B-Mets lost, 6-2. Cohoon also gave up a first-inning solo homer to Travis Snider. It was nice to see Cohoon recover enough from that difficult third to make it through six innings. It wasn’t a great day for the Bingo offense, but Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit his 15th homer, Michael Fisher hit his third, and Sean Ratliff added a pair of doubles. Boxscore
  • St. Lucie’s game against Clearwater was suspended in the top of the first inning, the score 0-0. Boxscore
  • Jim Fuller had a rare poor outing, digging the Sand Gnats into a 6-0 hole they couldn’t get out of, losing 8-4 to Greenville. Savannah did make some progress chipping away at the lead, scoring three runs over the last four innings of the game, but there just wasn’t enough time to chip away at eight runs. Cesar Puello had a single and a double, while Jefry Marte had three singles of his own. Boxscore
  • Brooklyn won 7-6 in 10 against Tri-City on Sunday. Will Cherry, Brian Harrison, Cory Vaughn, and Rylan Sandoval all had multi-hit games to make up for some so-so pitching performances. The Cyclones won it in the tenth when Joe Bonfe reached on an error, made his way to third, and scored on a wild pitch. Boxscore
  • It was another stinker for Kingsport, who allowed 15 runs on 19 hits in a 15-5 loss to Johnson City. Jonathan Kountis, freshly demoted from Brooklyn, made his first start and was terrible, while none of the relievers called in to follow were able to put out the fire. Boxscore
  • The GCL Mets beat the GCL Cardinals, 5-3. Boxscore
