Mets 1, Pirates 0: You Suck, We Rule

New, 101 comments

It took waiting through a 44-minute rain delay and ten innings of utterly uneventful baseball, but the light-hitting Mets outlasted the light-hitting Pirates, 1-0, in a game that could have realistically gone 20 or even 50 innings without a resolution.

Dillon Gee tossed six shutout innings, but wasn't spectacular or anything. He struck out three and walked four, and gave up many more fly outs than ground outs, so the process wasn't overwhelmingly positive even if the results were. The proof is in the pudding, though, where the "proof" in this case is the 1-0 victory while the "pudding" is actual pudding. Rice pudding, to be specific.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with David Wright at the plate right now, but he saw just six pitches in four times to the plate and seems to have been sucked into the morass of ineptitude that swallowed the rest of the offense months ago. Heck, Gee saw eight pitches in his two plate appearances. I guess opposing teams have little reason to give Wright good pitches to hit, though at least Ike Davis's recent hot streak has provided him with a little bit of lineup protection, whatever that's worth (something, probably, but I'd bet it's not nearly as much as lineup protectionists would have you believe).

You want some good news? Josh Thole's .374 on-base percentage leads the team, and though he isn't hitting for any power he is getting on base enough to place him in the middle of the pack--or even slightly better--among NL catchers in wOBA. What's more, he has thrown out nine of 21 would-be base-stealers. He'll be the Mets starting catcher in 2011 and will make around the league minimum salary.

R.A. Dickey takes on Zach Duke at 7:10pm Tuesday night.
