Meet the Mets

Slow day in Mets land. I'll lead off with a piece by Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger: "Better Drafting, Support Of David Wright Among Keys To Fixing Mets". Andy had me at the title.

Jason Bay will not play again this season. However, he has been concussion symptom-free for two weeks now. Also noted in that Bay article -- Tim Teufel has joined the Mets for the final homestand as an extra coach.

Willie Randolph hopes to manage again one day. Laugh out loud.

Toby Hyde notes that Baseball America named Aderlin Rodriguez the #9 prospect in the Appalachian League.

Joe D. at Metsmerized believes that the Mets always shrivel up in big spots, especially in September pennant races. He also writes that adding Babe Ruth wouldn't help any, as the Mets are just too un-clutch.

David "DP" Lennon tweets that Ken Takahashi retired from professional baseball earlier this season.

Random Mets facts:

  • Luis Castillo is 0-for-2 with two strikeouts since September 5th.
  • Carlos Beltran has a higher OPS (.775) than Angel Pagan (.771).
  • David Wright is tied with Tommie Agee and Dave Kingman for the single season club strikeout record, with 156.

Around MLB

The Phillies clinched the NL East. That's all I have to say about that.

The Braves knocked off the Marlins 2-1 in extra innings. Cyborg Tommy Hanson pitched well, and wonders why humans still believe wins are a useful stat for evaluating a pitcher. The Braves lead the Padres by half a game in the Wild Card standings.

I'm glad we don't have A.J. Burnett for another three years at $16.5 million per.

Rays players called poor attendance at home "embarrassing". Yikes.

The human garbage that killed Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others was convicted on three counts of second-degree murder.

Buc Dugout gives Pirates President Frank Coonelly a suggestion for his end-of-season letter to fans.

Finally, here is the "best rich people lunch in history".
