Onion SportsDome Tackles Mets-Phillies Rivalry

If you haven't yet checked out Onion SportsDome on Comedy Central, do yourself a favor and get on it. It's just what you might expect from the folks at The Onion: a pitch-perfect send up of SportsCenter. They have the look, the tone, and above all the smarm of The Worldwide Leader imitated exactly.

It is almost Colbert-Report-esque in its refusal to show any cracks in the armor. If you close your eyes, you can imagine Scott Van Pelt or some other SC anchor-of-the-month reciting the same lines, if only they weren't about Bill Belichick throwing acid in Tom Brady's face or a league of meth addicts competing to see who can kill the most imaginary snakes.

The main reason I'm mentioning SportsDome in this space is because the most recent episode took on the Mets-Phillies rivalry. It also parodied the exploitative, manipulative "sick kid" segments that appear frequently on ESPN (which I've always thought are the network's subconscious attempt to salve its conscience for doing terrible things, like employing Steve Phillips). In this clip--The WishZone!--a gravely ill young girl asks for one humble request: To heckle the living poop out of David Wright. I would say this is an exaggeration of the Phillies fan mentality, but only by the slimmest of margins.

Please note that this is the online version, which means no bleeps, which means it has some very salty, NSFW language. And said language is recited by a tiny girl, which will make you look like even more of a creep if you watch this in your cube without benefit of headphones. Forewarned is forearmed.
