Carlos Beltran Signs Two-Year, $26 Million Deal With Cardinals

Carlos Beltran has signed with the Cardinals for two years, $26 million with no option, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis-Post Dispatch. The Blue Jays and Indians were also reportedly interested. Why couldn't it be the Blue Jays?

Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright and Carlos Beltran will be on the same team next season. Yuck, if only because of the 2006 NLCS rehashing which will play out during broadcasts each time the Mets face the Cardinals. In reality, there are no authentic hard feelings here. Let's see how long it takes for the Best Fans In Baseball to #BlameBeltran.

Update: MLBTradeRumors reminds us that the Giants will not receive a first round draft pick as compensation for losing Type A free agent Beltran, due to a clause in his contract with the Mets. The Cardinals do not have to surrender a draft pick for signing him.

Update #2: Viva El Birdos likes the deal, as does FanGraphs (post by our own Eno Sarris). McCovey Chronicles is understandably displeased about the Giants' failure to retain Beltran. And because it bears repeating: the Mets traded two months of Beltran for years and years of cost-controlled top prospect Zack Wheeler.
