Mets 3, Braves 0: Bullpen Shuts Out Braves, Wright Provides the Offense

As the dust was clearing on the release of Luis Castillo, the Mets played a spring training game.  It was a day for the bullpen as D.J. Carrasco got the start and was followed by a host of other bullpen arms.  Carrasco pitched 3 innings and allowing only a walk and a hit with 2 strikeouts.  There have been some rumblings that Carrasco could turn out to be a starting pitcher, and considering Chris Capuano has thrown a mere 5 innings in spring training games, it's not totally out of the question.

Jason Isringhausen pitched next, walking the lead off batter and giving him another free base with a wild pitch.  On the bright side, Izzy got the next three batters out on 2 strikeouts and a fly ball.  Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 5th inning with a strikeout and no walks.  So far this spring, that makes 7 strikeouts and 1 walk for Frankie.  Oliver Perez didn't get shelled as walked and struck out a batter a piece in the 6th without allowing a run.  Although he was cut this morning, Boof Bonser threw a scoreless frame with a pair of strikeouts.  Tim Byrdak, seemingly in line to make the team as its lefty specialist, pitched the 9th and allowed only 1 hit.

David Wright had a great day, driving in Angel Pagan on a single in the 4th.  With Pagan on base again in the 6th, Wright blasted a 2-run home run.  Ronny Paulino made his Mets spring training debut, flying out in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Justin Turner got the start at second base today, and he had a single in 3 plate appearances.  Daniel Murphy flied out in a pinch hitting appearance.  The updated second base competition chart is a line shorter now that Castillo is gone.  The odds that Luis Hernandez makes the team should still be incredibly low, but he'll remain in the table as long as he remains in major league camp.

Emaus 26 0.231 0.310 0.269 36 2
Murphy 39 0.308 0.341 0.462 42 2
Turner 32 0.281 0.303 0.344 30 0
Hernandez 17 0.294 0.368 0.412 3 0

It'd be great if Murphy and Brad Emaus split time at second to start this season while Justin Turner heads to Buffalo to provide depth.

The Mets play two split-squad games tomorrow, visiting the Braves and hosting the Nationals shortly after 1 pm.  The home game will be broadcast on WPIX and WFAN.
