Grasshoppers 5, Sand Gnats 4: An Entomological Encounter

Results from game one of the South Atlantic League Championship Series, played on Monday, September 12th.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Savannah had a 1-run lead. In all, five homers had hopped the park -- two from the bat of DH Blake Forsythe, including the eighth-inning go-ahead sensation. Angel Cuan had pitched just well enough, and a terrific mid-innings showing by Chase Hutchingson had carried the contest to the Game One closer, a 29th round lefthander by the name of Hamilton Bennett.

Who walked the lead-off batter. Attempting to right the unforgivable, Hamilton fielded a bunt on the next play and fired to second, cutting down the lead runner -- then survived a dugout-clearing "home run" called foul by the men in blue (the opposing skipper was tossed for arguing). After eventually striking his man out, there were two away -- that is, two away for a 29th round lefthander by the name of Hamilton Bennett.

Who walked on the go-ahead run! This time there would be no redeeming plays, no corrections; only a sad, sad balk and a freebie to load the bases. Not surviving that, Hamilton watched from the dugout as righty Ronny Morla stepped in, with three runners wriggling at his back. When Ronny was ready to pitch, the seemingly inevitable occurred: a single.
