Report: Mets To Offer David Wright $100 Million To Begin Negotiations

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Mets are prepared to open negotiations with David Wright with an offer in the neighborhood of $100 million. Heyman's source says the Mets' goal is to keep Wright with the team "for life."

Perhaps the most obvious comparison for Wright's potential extension with the Mets is the deal that Ryan Zimmerman signed with the Washington Nationals. The details, per Baseball Prospectus:

6 years/$100M (2014-19), plus 2020 club option. Signed extension with Washington 2/26/12. 14-18:$14M annually. 19:$18M. 20:$18M club option, $2M buyout. 5 year/$10M personal services contract beginning once playing career ends. No-trade protection, 2014-19. If traded in 2012-13, salaries increase to $16M in 2014 and $18M annually in 2015-18, with option unchanged and personal-services contract voided.

Such an extension would be a no-brainer for the Mets. Wright is still one of the best third basemen in the game, and he turns 30 in December. While his production between 2009 and 2012 wasn't as good as it was from 2005 through 2008, Wright is still one of the best hitters at the position, and he made big strides with the glove this year, to boot.
