Andy Martino of the Daily News reports that free agent Chris Young has narrowed his options to signing with the Mets or Padres, but is leaning towards the Mets because of his relationship with Sandy Alderson. Young posted a 1.88 ERA in 24 innings for the Mets last season before succumbing to injury. He had surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder, also known as the Johan Santana injury. Martino notes that there is "nothing imminent" between Young and the Mets.

The Mets did next to nothing this offseason to improve their rotation, despite a plethora of available low-cost arms. Re-signing Young would add depth but it's an uninspiring move. However, he is a useful pitcher in the rare case that he is healthy. A cheap deal with incentives and no expectations is fine.
