I'll begin with the positive. The Mets weren't exactly facing the Cardinals' best starting pitcher, but they had little problem scoring runs this afternoon. Ike Davis hit a three-run home run in the first inning, Lucas Duda hit a solo bomb in the fourth, and Ronny Cedeno came through with a two-run single in the sixth.
The negative: Pelfrey gave up 5 runs in 6 innings of work. One run was unearned, but he allowed 8 hits. On the upside, he didn't walk anyone and struck out a pair. Although he's done nothing encouraging in his spring starts, Pelfrey has always been much worse when the games don't count than when they do.
Bobby Parnell and Jon Rauch each threw a scoreless inning, even though neither recorded a strikeout. Frank Francisco continued his spring troubles, allowing another run in his inning of work. Josh Edgin, who's fighting to make the team's roster for Opening Day, threw a scoreless tenth inning.
The spring training grind continues tomorrow. The Mets visit the Nationals at 1:05 pm with Matt Harvey and Stephen Strasburg set to start the game. The game can be heard on WFAN.
Nice job by BurleighGrimes; her effort in the game thread embiggens us all.
