Mets 8, Cardinals 6: Santana's First Start a Success

Johan Santana made about as good a spring training debut as anyone could have reasonably hoped. Over the course of two innings, his fastball sat at approximately 88 mph, and it occasionally touched 89 or 90. Control was a bit of an issue, as Santana walked the first batter he faced, but he allowed only one hit in a scoreless appearance.

As for the rest of the pitching staff, R.A. Dickey threw a scoreless pair of innings before Jon Rauch gave up a pair of runs in one inning and Jeurys Familia gave up four in one-and-one-third. Pedro Beato, D.J. Carrasco, and Josh Edgin finished off the game without allowing a run, but Beato did leave the game with an apparent shoulder injury.

Andres Torres was clearly the star at the plate this afternoon. He singled and eventually came around to score in the second inning and hit a bases-clearing triple with two outs in the third to plate three runs. Outside of Torres, Jason Bay drew two walks, and Adam Loewen had a pair of hits.

The Mets' spring training schedule continues tomorrow with a 1:05 pm game on the road against the Marlins. The game will not be broadcast.
