Jordany Valdespin, Jeremy Hefner Called Up to 24-Hour Taxi Squad

The New York Mets have called up Jordany Valdespin, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes (en Español). Anthony DiComo reports that Jeremy Hefner is also up with Valdespin, but neither are necessarily active.

Adam Rubin clarifies that Valdespin and Hefner are not active and will instead be a part of a 24-hour Taxi Squad, which means that Major League teams can place players on the squad for potential promotion while not actually calling them up.

This allows the team to make other moves so minor league clubs can remain at full strength. In any case, the player has to leave the next day if he's not activated.

Valdespin, the 24 year-old Dominican second baseman and now center fielder, figures to be in mix for playing time if/when he arrives. In six minor league seasons in the Mets' system, Jordany maintains a .283/.330/.425 career line.

Hefner, 26, also has six minor league seasons under his belt and has a minor league career ERA of 3.79 while maintaining nearly eight strikeouts and three walks per nine innings.
